New women's professional soccer league announced, with eight U.S. teams

"U.S. Soccer has announced a new women's league in the United States.

Eight cities or regions will be part of the league's start: Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, New Jersey, Portland, Seattle, western New York state and Washington, D.C.

The league is set to start in March or April next year.

The Canadian and Mexican soccer federations are on board for the league, looking to use the league to develop its talent.

..."

FYI... It's good to see teams in Seattle, Portland, and Kansas City. I'm not sure why they would put a team in Boston, however.

but I don't believe creating a league with 8 teams all across the US is the way to build a women's professional league. The travel costs alone will bankrupt this league in a year or two

because they had a franchise (Breakers) in the previous women's league, the WPS..The problem with all this is, the WPS lasted only a few years and averaged but 3500 a game in it's final season. The new league's long term viability is shaky at best..

Time will tell if management has a feasible plan this time around. Washington and New Jersey also seem sketchy, but Chicago, KC, Portland and Seattle are towns they need to make it in if it is ever going to work.

I'm excited, to say the least. The Thorns (love the name...) will play at Jeld-Wen Field, where Timbers home games are played. It's a nice facility (although already too small for the Timbers...every game sells out fast), and it's an easy walking distance from my house. I'm not sure how the process of divvying up the USWNT players who are interested in the league will work out, but if where they currently live is any factor, we could be sitting pretty. Abby Wambach and Megan Rapinoe both live here in Portland.
