Most Christians are going to adapt to the new America just fine.
Since the Supreme Courts decision in Obergefell v. Hodges that legalized marriage equality in America, some conservative Christians have been downright apoplectic. In a ridiculously offensive analogy, right wing anti-equality zealot Bryan Fischer tweeted:
?@BryanJFischer
From a moral standpoint, 6/26 is now our 9/11.
Channeling a similar anger, though in a more commonly heard form, Fox News commentator Todd Starnes tweeted:
If you thought the cultural purge over the Confederate flag was breathtaking -- wait until you see what LGBT activists do with Christians.
10:06 AM - 26 Jun 2015
Meanwhile, Rod Dreher of the American Conservative has, in his own words, a more sober analysis of the decision on Times website:
To which the vast majority of Americans say, Hallelujah! Dreher is correctthe idea of equal treatment for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans (if not its full realization yet) is indeed the new normal in America. Even before the courts decision, 6 in 10 Americans supported the right of same-sex couples to marryand over half of Americans said they would be less likely to support any 2016 presidential candidate who opposed marriage equality.

Yes, it does take all kinds. Absolutely fucking correct of you. Congratulations.

But, in this regard, I am not optimistic at all.

You're not interested in discussion. You're interested in posting stupid shit and pouncing on respondents whose views aren't in conformance with your own.

(48,181 posts)moved away from their normal position of overt bigotry. While public opinion has shifted dramatically, so far that has not been reflected in any corresponding shift in institutional policy.
The largest church, the RCC, remains entrenched in its homophobic bigotry. With a few notable exceptions, mainstream Protestant religions have the same position on homosexuality as the RCC. The evangelical/fundamentalists are, in conjunction with their well funded allies in the Republican Party, engaged in a well thought out strategy to counter equality with their new formulation of 1st amendment freedom of religion to include effective nullification of not just the recent Supreme Court decision but all laws that conflict with religious beliefs.
Post homophobic Christianity is wishful thinking.

(45,319 posts)and all the worst of the religious right. Pope Francis gave the keynote speech, Tony Perkins said the atmosphere was 'euphoric'.
Vatican Strengthens Ties with Evangelicals and Mormons Against Gay Marriage
"The presence of American evangelicals and the LDS Church was particularly notable. Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church, and Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Conventions Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, each gave speeches, and representatives from the Heritage Foundation and the Family Research Council in Washington attended. President Henry Eyring of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first presidency spoke and Elder Tom Perry of the LDSs Quorum of the Twelve also joined. In the United States, this trio of faiths has worked together to stand against the governments Affordable Care Acts contraception mandate, but it was the first time they were coming together at the Vatican to talk about marriage."

So this OP seems a bit overly generous to that faith community. Francis is heading to the US for another 'Family Values' conference and a speech to the US Congress. Cake and eat it too, that's the faith community, good cop/bad cop methods.

(106,886 posts)I agree with Ms. Kohn - Most Christians are going to adapt to the new America just fine.
Don't know how far the push back from the right will be, just can't see it really getting a lasting toe hold. Most of it is so patently absurd.
The various religious hierarchies are another matter, of course. I think the religiously active public has a large opportunity here. The changes in GLBT equality have largely been fueled by general public opinion, imo. People vote with their feet and religious bureaucracies read the same media as everyone else. There's some influence to be had there.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)an anti-GLBT sentiment. I think it's going to be very difficult to hold this out on a religious basis as time moves on.
As for the religious bureaucracies, they are slow to change, but they do have the capacity. Change or die, imo.
Wait a few hundred years for change, or what?
Me, I'm pulling for "die"--the sooner the better.
Of course, YMMV, as your counsel elsewhere clearly indicates.

Can we abbreviate this to "PHC"? My fingers are getting tired...
