Resistance to gay marriages travels a well-worn path

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/religion/resistance-to-gay-marriages-travels-a-well-worn-path/2015/07/12/bbd82c40-2903-11e5-960f-22c4ba982ed4_story.html

In 1967, Liane Peters, an immigrant from Germany, fell in love with a quiet, handsome man she worked with at a Miami bakery. The couple went together to the Dade County courthouse and asked for a marriage license. But she was white and he was black, and a county judge turned them away.

...

“This is so much different than that,” said Mat Staver, founder of the conservative law firm Liberty Counsel. “People who think it might die down underestimate that this is a matter that cannot simply be put away by people of faith forced to participate in something they believe is wrong.”

...

The lingering question for Wallenstein, the historian and writer, is whether history will treat the gay marriage ruling as kindly as it has the Loving decision. Today, five decades later, interracial marriages are roundly accepted and universally enforced. But the complex collision of religious conviction and gay rights might prove more impervious to change.

Liane Van Hook, after all, who fought so hard for interracial marriage, is herself opposed to same-sex unions.

Bottom line seems to be: the bigots (unsurprisingly) see themselves on the "right" side of history, not the wrong. Deeply-held religious beliefs are hard to overcome.

It's not overt but people are obviously uncomfortable with it, and make the couples lives uncomfortable, to say the least.

we had an interracial couple living next door to us. They were Baptists. They went to the Baptist church in town and were told that they were not welcome because the Bible prohibits interracial marriage but they kids could attend because it wasn't the fault of the kids that their parents continued to sin. They sent their kids there. They had no explanation why they didn't just find another church.

...it is perfectly acceptable to throw money into the Catholic Church's child-rapist defense fund, because if you really believe in Apostolic succession, then there's nowhere else for you to go.

Dilemmas.

Then maybe that belief is wrong? If you can't leave the club because it's the only one that has that one belief, then maybe you should rethink your life choices.
