Two words stand out, Heathen and Barbaric. I never knew that colors could be Barbaric.
I've always had a liking for Tiki culture. I was about 6 when this became a big fad in the late 50's. Even then I knew it was merely an image thing and not a serious consideration of the religious origins. To learn about that, here's a great site:

An interesting chapter is the one that compares similarities with Old Testament myths. The author tries to credit them with some shipwrecked Spaniards. It does point out that these same Spaniards didn't have any success in injecting the story of Jesus into Hawaiian folklore.
The other attempt at explanation is to regurgitate the myth of the lost tribes of Israel. Really, people should be whacked on the side of the head whenever they put forward such nonsense.
