Clinton Replaces ‘In God We Trust’ With ‘E Pluribus Unum’ -

July 29, 2016
by Michael Stone

Religious conservatives are not happy.

In her historic acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention Thursday night, Hillary Clinton said:

America is once again at a moment of reckoning. Powerful forces are threatening to pull us apart. Bonds of trust and respect are fraying.

And just as with our founders, there are no guarantees. It truly is up to us. We have to decide whether we all will work together so we all can rise together.

Our country’s motto is ‘E Pluribus Unum’: out of many, we are one. Will we stay true to that motto?

Many religious conservatives were outraged by Clinton’s remarks. They were offended that Clinton had referred to “E Pluribus Unum” as our national motto, instead of “In God We Trust.”

In fact, religious conservatives have a point. “E Pluribus Unum” is not the official motto, the official motto is “In God We Trust.” But it wasn’t always that way.

Breaking vows made in church? No problem.
Actually meaning your "for better or worse, 'til death us do part" promise?
DEEPLY TROUBLING.

Get rid of all God references in the public space, including currency.

from your link:

The change to “In God We Trust” was motivated by fear of the Soviet Union and “godless communism” during the height of the Cold War and the “red scare” of the 1950’s. The change was a mistake that violated the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and betrayed the secular values upon which the U.S. was founded, as well as the explicit intentions of the founding fathers.

In fact, “E Pluribus Unum” was the original motto proposed and established by founding fathers John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson in 1776.

Maybe they can write an article that she's only pretending to be a Methodist and is really a 'secret Muslim.'

Faith is private and the federal Goverment is not a Church.

And a 'holier than thou' attitude will never impress me.

just because it pisses them off. At no time did I hear her say this was replacing our 1956 Red Scare inspired motto.

That "In God we trust" thing is the motto of christofascists who don't want to obey constitutional separation of church and state.

We can justify it and say why she was really more correct than the facts, but that's silly.

And, yes, Obama also got it wrong. Then again, nobody's perfect. He also misstated a thing or two about the Constitution--not interpretation, just factually wrong on their face.

At least HRC didn't translate e pluribus unum as "out of one, many," as a former presidential nominee did (years before he was the nominee).

There was no "official motto" of the United States at all for 180 years. But "e pluribus unum" has been on the Great Seal of the United States since 182, even before the Treaty of Paris.

Nor was there a "national anthem" until 1931.

I expect the republicans' next complaint will be that no president of the United States has had an ovary and that this is not the time to break a long-standing American tradition. They're such hypocrites.
