Need for Catholic health care has never been greater, says cardinal

COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNS) — As society has placed the dignity of human life under constant attack, there has never been a greater need for the Catholic approach to health care in response to the needs of the sick, Cardinal Raymond L. Burke told participants in a medical ethics conference in Columbus.

“In a totally secularized society, there is more than ever a hunger for the witness to the meaning of human life and human suffering which Catholic health care gives,” said Cardinal Burke, who lives in Rome, where he serves as patron of the Knights of Malta.

“Our country suffers the scourge of an attack on the dignity of human life,” Cardinal Burke said. Signs of that include “direct abortion on demand, the termination of the life of those who have special needs or are weakened because of illness or advanced years, and the pervasive view of the human body as a tool to be used for achieving maximum personal convenience and pleasure.”

“Catholic health care, by its constant and careful attention to the perennial moral teaching of the church, safeguards and promotes the respect for all human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death,” he continued. “It stands as a beacon of light, the light of Christ, in a society which finds itself confused about the most fundamental truths, about the nature of human life, and about the vocation of man and woman to follow Christ in his suffering and dying.”
Catholic health care “responds to the fundamental need of the sick to know that those who care for them are free to act according to a well-informed conscience,” he said. It also “looks not only to the care of those who are sick, but to the promotion of good health among the population in general.”

“The proposed approach of cultural tolerance in Catholic health care is unacceptable,” he said, “for it would countenance the acceptance of policies and practices contrary to the natural moral law, which is always and everywhere binding.”

“Why would a Catholic hospital see the need to compete for secular prestige by engaging in practices which violate the moral law?” Cardinal Burke asked. “The unique contribution and therefore prestige of a Catholic health care institution comes from its fidelity to the church’s teaching in every aspect of its life.”

5. If he'd said anything about making sure everyone gets healthcare, or it being more affordable

I might give him a tiny acknowledgement - healthcare missing some bits like family planning is still better than nothing, and it would mean he sees the dangers of Republicare. But no, it's all about his ideas of morality - the only time he mentions money is to reject finance that comes with conditions, such as doing proper Ob and Gyn work. You have to be really clueless to talk about healthcare in the USA and make it all about your own prejudices.
