Chicago bishops: 'gay marriage' will have consequences for Illinois

Chicago, Ill., Jan 3, 2013 / 04:10 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Cardinal Francis George and the six auxiliary bishops of Chicago have warned that a proposal to recognize “gay marriage” in Illinois is against the common good and will force Illinoisans to “pretend to accept something that is contrary to the common sense of the human race.”

“Civil laws that establish ‘same-sex marriage’ create a legal fiction. The state has no power to create something that nature itself tells us is impossible,” the bishops said in a Jan. 1 letter.

Cardinal George has sent the letter to every priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago, asking that the letter be distributed in parish bulletins this weekend.

Despite the reflexive Catholic bashing that will be here shortly, this is the nub of it.

for something one of the highest officials in that State say? Nor can we question the continued support from those who say they are against what the Church is doing?

Let's all ignore their bigotry and it will go away.

Unless you think there is no difference between criticism and reflexive bashing.

let you be the arbitrator of that. Since any criticism of Catholics supporting a Homophobic, bigoted organization is considered "bashing" to you.

everyone on DU would say they are a douchebag. But if we say this douchebag is a douchebag, it's "Catholic bashing"? Nice try, rug.

Calling him a douchebag is not the same as calling members of a religion douchebags.

Don't let precision in language thwart you from your goal.

4. I doubt that the Bishop is either a legal or a constitutional expert.

I expect the majority of the IL legislature get that and will take his comments with a grain of salt, in the context that he's got a soapbox for those comments due to his position. He's using it which is his right; yet he's speaking to a decreasing audience of supporters for his POV. I'd wager *everyone* gets that.
