Pat Robertson: Islam not religion but 'demonic political system'

Controversial conservative Christian leader Pat Robertson told viewers on Tuesday that Islam is not a religion but a demonic political and economic system with only a religious veneer.

Right Wing Watch reports that Pat Robertson, an influential leader in the US right-wing evangelical movement, passed judgement on Islam during an episode of his TV program "The 700 Club," in which he was responding to a news story about the war in Mali.

According to Right Wing Watch, Robertson, referring to Islam as religion of chaos, said:
"Every time you look up — these are angry people, it’s almost like it’s demonic that is driving them to kill and to maim and to destroy and to blow themselves up," Robertson said of Islam. "It's a religion of chaos... I hardly think to call it a religion, it’s more of — well, it’s an economic and political system with a religious veneer."

As The Huffington Post notes, Robertson's opinion of the demoniacal nature of Islam is hardly surprising because as far as most fundamentalist Christians are concerned all religions beside Christianity and Judaism are demonic. But most fundamentalist US Christians single out Islam for special attention and mention.

His ratings must be flagging, so he has to come out with an outrageous/offensive comment to get people to tune in!

Standard Operating Procedure with conservatives.

Robertson worships John Galt, not Jesus Christ.

right and the worse they look, the better for us.

I hope he keeps on spewing his bigotry and hate.

The earth is not better off for hearing his idiotic and bizarro ramblings.
We are made for truth and beauty; Robertson offers neither.

His time has come and gone, and anything uplifting he might have had to offer will never be said.

when he sinks, another like him will rise.

He can ramble on all he wants, for all I care. He brings nothing to the table and has lost almost all his power. I would rather have him than someone with actual influence.

15. Robertson or someone with actual influence?

Of course, we don't want someone with actual influence combined with Robertson's opinions. We Democrats are the optimistic ones and always hoping for the best.

As for myself, I've learned to turn away from the crazies. - Life is too short to let inanities take up one's time and thoughts, except when wanting to relax, and when relaxing it won't be with the likes of Robertson ringing in my ears.

to differentiate the religious right from the rest of the religious community.

As there is a tendency among some to lump all together, and I have an interest in seeing the liberal/progressive religious community take back the mantle, its a mission of sorts.

18. Robertson has no "actual influence"?

I don't think it does the liberal cause any good to refuse to acknowledge the power of our opponents, cbayer. Burying one's head in the sand or plugging one's ears and singing "la la la la" about reality is probably the number 1 reason the religious left has such a tough time getting any traction. They don't like what they see and so they deny it exists.

Robertson owns the CBN media empire, with a regular broadcast watched by one million viewers every day. What liberal believer has anything even remotely close to that kind of influence?
