The Rev. Russell Floyd of First United Methodist of Irving distributed ashes not only in church on Ash Wednesday. He took to the streets.

At the DART Downtown Irving/Heritage Crossing Station, along with coffee and doughnuts, commuters could get blessed with a smudged cross of ashes.

This new option for those who can’t make it to church on Ash Wednesday is called Ashes to Go. It was started in St. Louis in 2007 by Episcopalian minister Teresa K.M. Danieley. Her idea has spread to churches across the country.

Floyd heard about the movement last year.
“I just stumbled upon it when I was looking for an illustration for Transfiguration Sunday,” he said.
