Florida House Speaker: Football coaches can’t pray with players? Change the law again!

Florida’s house speaker says state law should be changed to allow public high school football coaches to pray with their teams.

“I feel it’s sad for a society like America that, as a culture, we decided in an extracurricular activity it’s inappropriate for an adult to lead a prayer voluntarily with students who volunteer to pray with them,” said House Speaker Will Weatherford, a Wesley Chapel Republican.

Weatherford said he thought a law passed last year would permit superintendents to set guidelines for such worship activities.

His comments came after the superintendent of Pasco County schools sent a letter Friday to the district’s football coaches reminding them that it’s inappropriate for adults to initiate, lead or participate in prayer with students while serving in their school roles.

Hernando County officials sent similar memos to coaches.

I don't ever remember kids wanting to pray in HS Marrah_G Oct 2013 #3
It hasn't. It's the adults that want kids to pray in school. cleanhippie Oct 2013 #7

it is inappropriate for adults to lead a prayer when they are employees of the public.

Adults are free to lead in prayer when they are on their own time and not in a position of power.

just imagine a Muslim leading their Christian kid in a prayer to Allah. "Voluntary," of course.

Would they be OK with that?

When he is acting in that capacity he can not show favortism or support for any religion. He can believe as he wants and pray on his own time. If he does not like that, then he needs to quit.

He can then pray whenever he wants, though he will no longer be the coach and not allowed in with the kids.
