"The Moon of Wintertime" or the "Huron Carol"
I made this video in 2012 and finished it after Christmas which reduced its audience.
I think it is an interesting example of how the Catholic church synchronized traditional beliefs with the beliefs of the indigenous people they wished to convert. Really a very beautiful melody with a distinctive medieval sound. The original lyrics are in the native language of the Huron/Wendat people. The song's melody is based on a traditional Sixteenth century, French folk song, "Une Jeune Pucelle" ("A Young Maid" . The Hurons preserved the hymn through oral tradition.
Lydia McCauley sings an old Canadian folksong "The Moon of Wintertime" also known as the "Huron Carol." Written in 1643 by Jean de Brébeuf a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Huron. The melody is taken from a traditional French folksong. Music courtesy of Magnatune. Creative Commons by-nc-sa license
