New prelate to be named to lead tiny Byzantine Catholic community in Greece?

The Vatican will soon name a Benedictine monk to head the Byzantine-rite Greek Catholic Church, according to Vatican journalist Sandro Magister of L'Espresso. That appointment would be sure to draw protests from the Orthodox Church in Greece.
Father Manuel Nin, a theologian and rector of the Pontifical Greek College in Rome, will be named the new apostolic exarch of the tiny Byzantine-Catholic community, Magister reports. There are only three Byzantine Catholic parishes in Greece; most of the faithful are Ukrainians or Chaldeans rather than Greek natives.
Since the 1970s, Magister notes, Orthodox leaders have been expecting the Vatican to appoint a pastor who is not a bishop as leader of the Eastern Catholics in Greece. Their hope has been consistently disappointed, Magister writes, and soon will be once again.
