It's hard to think where the Tonga volcano might place on the scale, they keep raising the probable size. The explosion not only penetrated the upper stratosphere, it also reduced the floor of the caldera dropped 700m and the ocean floor around it was covered by pyroclastic flows and was scoured clean of marine life. If that thing had blown up on land, we might be hurting for a few years.
