The Science of Curiosity: Seeking Signs of Past Mars Habitability



NASA's Mars Curiosity rover, due to land shortly after midnight on Aug 6, won't be looking for current life on Mars. What Curiosity's suite of instruments will be looking for is evidence that Mars could have been habitable in its past.

since Martian meteorites have been found to contain what looks very much like fossilized bacteria here on Earth.

Whether or not it ever progressed beyond single cell organisms before the planet cooled and lost most of its atmosphere and liquid water is anyone's guess.
