I think the most interesting part of it all is that the whole giving up meat thing on Fridays is still supposed to be year around unless you give up something else. And I know plenty of people that go out for lobster and shrimp on Fridays--that's sure giving things up so you can understand repentance.

And it would be great if some gave up being assholes for Lent. That would at least be a change that meant something more than fucking chocolate.

She was always relieved when he poured that first tumbler of bourbon before Easter dinner as soon as they got home from church.

A Lenten fast made a great deal of sense in the spring for most of human history, food stores were depleted and what was left over was full of weevils, woody, or starting to rot. Salmon were running but game was skinny and not worth hunting so fish could be kept on the menu with not much else. People could feel good about what they were already doing, going without and losing weight.

It just looks silly now, in a time of relative abundance in rich countries.

The Lutheran church I grew up in didn't push it, my family never gave up anything for lent, so it's just an alien concept to me.

As others have remarked, it's offensive how the privileged treat it today. A particularly noxious DUer once gave up DU for lent. (What a pleasant 40 days that was for the rest of us!) I shit you not. Wow, what a sacrifice. Truly on par with what Jesus did, I'm sure.
