2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHad someone ask me "Why do you support Bernie" -
But it was in a different way than I'm normally asked. My friend actually said "Take your time, I don't want an answer now. Tell me tomorrow"
This is what I'm going to try and tell them this afternoon. I may just copy this to an email.
I'm tired. I'm so frickken tired it's not even funny. I'm tired of the lies, the bait and switch. I'm tired of worrying about my kids future. We're doing the best we can to get all four through college but they'll still need some loans. My eldest has his degree already but he had to take a job as a cook because the jobs in his field aren't out there, or if they are... it's without the protection of unions and he gets screwed. All four of my kids are still living at home because they can't AFFORD to get a place of their own. The hours and the pay just aren't there.
I'm tired of the attitude that banks are supposed to be the powerful ones. I'm tired of seeing people I care about go to these places hat in hand saying "Please oh please can we have a loan?" I'm tired of seeing the insane amount of mailers offering super high interest rates to my kids (24.99 interest and yes higher) not because of their credit (All are over 700 rating) but because their youth and supposed inexperience in life makes them easy marks for predatory lending.
I'm tired of being told to suck it up, that it's just the way it is.
I'm tired of the health insurance industry, both standard medical and dental. Even with two, yes two dental insurance policies I'm still having to pay over 3k out of pocket for severe damage to my teeth due to malnutrition. I'm tired of having to get pre-approval for my infusions that keep me functioning, when it's been blatantly expressed I'm going to need them for the rest of my life. (I'm severely anemic along with other digestive issues) If I'm having this problem, what about the people who still don't have any health care at all? What about my kids when they do get out on their own? How will THEY go to the doctor when the deductible is so high they can't risk it? Anemia runs in my family along with a ton of other things.
I'm tired of what seems to be never ending war, over and over again. I'm tired of hearing how our youth is being used as cannon fodder and taken advantage of in these wars. I'm tired of wars for money.
I'm tired of grid lock in congress and them fighting like children over the budget. I'm tired of not having politicians say it like it is, instead constantly pandering.
I'm tired of being embarrassed of my country. We are supposed to be a shining beacon for the future, not a cesspool like we are now.
I'm tired of being told "It will never happen" but never getting a real to heart reason why. I'm tired of the echo chamber when I ask "How do you know if you don't at least fight for it, and keep fighting for it?"
I'm tired of the bones of our country crumbling and no one caring. I'm tired of the educational system being a joke. To help my kids learn what they needed we had to heavily supplement their education all through K-12. I'm tired of teachers having their hands tied, of no complete music or art programs in schools, of no flexibility in teaching a child to the very extent of their ability.
Capitulation is not good enough. Rolling over is not good enough. Shaking hands while crossing your fingers behind your back is NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
When your political system becomes it's own parody, it's time for us to rise.
The only thing that doesn't make me tired anymore is being able to look at someone with pride, and know that they will not only support you rising - but they will encourage it. Bernie, imperfect wonderful Bernie is the only one in the echo chamber answering back.
That in all it's essence is why I am supporting Bernie Sanders.

(32,861 posts)That we care about humanity. So many in our party seem to have taken the fuck you, I've got mine attitude that I usually associate with republicans.

(4,211 posts)Change can be scary. Especially when you've managed to carve out a relatively safe small place within our broken system. Your space may collapse.
For example, I'm relatively comfortable - paid well, and so I am able to exploit the patchwork of 529s, 401ks and HSAs. It's possible that the changes could destroy that patchwork, rendering my previous efforts moot.
If I was of a different mindset, that would be scary. It's a direct threat to my children's future, my retirement, and my entire family's health.
But I'm not of that mindset. Instead, I believe that everyone should have these, and if we change things everyone will have these.
And frankly, I'm in far more danger from banks and similar stealing those investments.

(9,895 posts)If you wanted to give a more terse answer, you could simply go with: "I support Bernie Sanders because he cannot be bought off and the list of things he stands for reads like the platform of the Democratic Party I want to be in."
Your heartfelt reply is a much better effort though, kudos!
