"Look, let's get this straight." (Tell it, John!!!)

Progressive 3.0: Beware the Latest Version of Hillary Clinton
by John Atcheson
Common Dreams
2/5/16

.......snip.........

Look, let’s get this straight.

It wasn't very long ago when Hillary Clinton favored the TPP, the Keystone XL Pipeline and the death penalty.

She also opposed gay marriage and reinstating Glass-Steagall.

Her foreign policy is closer to the neocons who got us into Iraq (which she voted for) than what the American people favor.

She’s flipped on immigration, gun control, and NAFTA.

That’s not progressive.

She attributes her changes towards progressivism to “evolving” as a result of “new information.”

But as Politico points out, for most of these issues, there was no new information. For example, what’s changed on gay marriage, other than public opinion?

It also begs a question: if Sanders could see the folly of invading Iraq, or the stupidity of repealing Glass-Steagall, or the gross inequity of trade pacts, why couldn’t she?

Either she has bad judgment, or she’s being disingenuous about flip-flopping.

But now it’s apparent that the American people are taking a progressive turn and so, Hillary is shedding her moderate coat, and donning her progressive one.

When Mrs. Clinton – filled with righteous indignation – says let’s talk about issues and let’s look forward, what she’s really saying is let’s not talk about my campaign financing, or my policy history, because it won’t bear the scrutiny my new, new, new progressive brand demands.

She was progressive at first when she was trying to counter Bernie, and then she turned moderate perhaps thinking at one point that his momentum disappeared, and now that it's clear that he's not going away, she's progressive again.
I mean, talk about flip-flop. For her, it's not just on the issues -but her identity as a politician.

10. There's plenty of opportunity to take Sanders to task for his record

Using goofy shit like #sandersopure to sidestep the reality of Hillary's checkered record (rhyme), is weak.

I have never felt since bernie announced that he wouldn't win. Its a knowing feeling that I can't explain. I just know that power will never cede power without a fight. But Bernie enjoys the fight and his focus is on us. We will carry him to victory. All of us.

9. One nit pick but it's a big one - she's still pro-death penalty.

She said last night that executing prisoners is an "appropriate punishment".

14. Internal polling must show this isn't a big issue for Dems

I personally agree it's a big issue but that's one area she's holding true to her conservative values. I'm betting for most people, that capital punishment takes a backseat to other issues.

I just can't personally reconcile being pro-state sanctioned murder with progressive values. Especially since the death penalty is inherently racist.

How do you humanely kill a person? Tennessee is thinking about bringing back the firing squad, and they already have ole sparky on standby.

16. It is a very valid point -- the ONLY "new information"...

...was how the issues were polling.

Anyone with an ounce of sense knows that her vote on the IWR was a political (mis)calculation. Her full-throated speech in defense of the vote was calculated to shore up her cred in the circles of Very Serious People in DC, so they would recognize that she could make "hard choices" in a non-partisan way.

Well that of course backfired hugely. Not only did the war (aka illegal invasion and occupation) go badly, and the aftermath continues to be nightmarish with no end in sight -- but politically it has hurt her badly.

Bernie, on the other hand, took an unpopular stand based on principle, and that is now serving him very well politically.

There's a lesson in there somewhere.
