Young Democrats Flock to Bernie Sanders, Spurning Hillary Clinton’s Polish and Poise

“He may seem like some old geezer who doesn’t care about stuff,” said Caroline Buddin, 24, a sales associate in Charleston, S.C. “But if you actually give him the time of day and listen to what he has to say, he has a lot of good ideas.”

In interviews, young supporters of the Vermont senator’s presidential bid almost all offer some version of the same response when asked why they like him: He seems sincere.

...
Mrs. Clinton’s support among young voters has fallen in the eight years since she last ran for president. In the 2008 Democratic primary in New Hampshire, 60 percent of voters ages 18 to 24 supported Mr. Obama, while those ages 25 to 29 split their support between the two candidates, according to exit polls conducted by Edison Research.

Some 87 percent of likely New Hampshire primary voters ages 18 to 29 said they would vote for Mr. Sanders in the state’s primary on Tuesday, compared with 13 percent for Mrs. Clinton, according to a UMass-Lowell poll conducted Feb. 1 to 3.

I want someone who actually, sincerely believes in the things I believe in.

4. Unfortunately, women in leadership roles don't get to be unpolished.

In fact, there is very narrow band between too polished and too unpolished for women.

A crazy-haired angry woman who yells all the time doesn't get anywhere near the presidency.

5. Well, lets be fair about this... prior to Bernie, everyone had to be polished.

It's not an issue of gender. If it were, I'd cry foul as well.

The crazy-haired angry image you suggest of Bernie Sanders is coming across to millennial, who have spent most of their lives dealing with invasive ads that are overly polished, as honest, and down to earth.

There's a major contrast happening. It would probably do Hillary some good to get a bit less focused on polish. I would argue that in the last debate, she came across, at least in moments, as more believable. There were even moments where I caught myself thinking "Maybe having Hillary as president wouldn't be so bad..." Then she put back on the façade that I've come to expect from her, and dashed that thought into oblivion.

6. That's not true. There have been plenty of angry unpolished white dudes around.

Ross Perot, for example, looked like a kook next to the polished Bill Clinton and GHW Bush, and he got pretty far.

10. Ross Perot was fairly polished, actually. I remember him fairly well.

Not as polished as Bill, sure, but who is?

8. Hillary is only "poised and polished"

when she's on script and when the question put to her are on script. If anyone deviates from her focus-group tested, polished, carefully crafted script, she starts to flail and gets flustered and snotty. "Like with a rag you mean?"
