Sanders and Clinton are EQUAL in favorability among Blacks who are familiar with them

(Actually, Sanders does marginally better!)

It's been a recurring theme on DU that Sanders can't win because he is not appealing to the AA community.

But according to the new Quinnipiac poll, Blacks who are familiar with Sanders view him just as favorably as those familiar with Clinton view her. (Of course, almost everyone know Clinton already.)

Short version: About 77% of those who feel they are sufficiently familiar with Clinton view her favorably, and about 78.5% of those who feel they are sufficiently familiar with Sanders view him favorably.

Here's the breakdown...

Sanders:
Favorable 55%
Unfavorable 14%
Hvn't hrd enough 31%

Clinton:
Favorable 73%
Unfavorable 20%
Hvn't hrd enough 5%
(and 2% refused to answer, which I suspect means that they had heard enough to be familiar with her, but didn't view her particularly favorobly OR unfavorably, so that none of the choices offered were applicable.)

So here's the math: 70% of the respondents are familiar enough with Sanders to have an opinion. Based on his 55% overall favorability figure, that means that 78.57% of those who are familiar enough with him to have an opinion view him favorably.

For Clinton, at least 93% (and probably 95%) consider themselves to be familiar enough with her. Based on her 73% overall favorability, that means that between 76.94% and 78.49% of those familiiar with Clinton view her favorably (and it's probably closer to the 76.95% figure, since really, probably 95% are sufficiently familiar with her).

Where are all the Clintstone supporters that said only White Older People will vote for Bernie?

In a few days we've gone from "Bernie will only do well in Iowa where there are old White people" to now Andrea Mitchell using the word "Droves" to describe how young women voted for Bernie....now we are talking about AA voting for Bernie....

Seems the narrative is being shattered on a daily basis

Being seen favorably doesn't exactly equate to a vote. Obviously, when you look at these numbers, you've got lots of respondents who view BOTH candidates favorably, yet they can only vote for one.

But at least it counters the meme that the AA community just doesn't like Bernie. Both he and Clinton are being seen favorably by roughly the same percentage of AA voters who are familiar with them. But how the actual votes split remains to be seen, even assuming Bernie works hard enough to achieve something approaching the same 95% voter familiarity Hillary has.

So... I'm not taking anything for granted, but it is at least a cause for some optimism among Sanders supporters, in countering what was one of the most persistent knocks on his candidacy.

and I expect that he honestly believes he's the best choice for the AA community, that his outreach is not merely strategic pandering. He's got a long way to go, but it's good to see that, when the AA community gets to know him, he does connect. Whether he can win over Hillary-leaning voters remains to be seen, though...
