Bernie Sanders: Prolific Democratic Party fundraiser

By Eric Bradner
February 5, 2016

Manchester , New Hampshire (CNN)—Bernie Sanders complained on the campaign trail Friday that dialing for dollars "affects your entire being."

What he didn't mention: The Vermont senator and presidential candidate is a prolific fundraiser himself and has regularly benefited from the Democratic Party apparatus.

In recent years, Sanders has been billed as one of the hosts for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee's retreats for the "Majority Trust" -- an elite group of top donors who give more than $30,000 per year -- at Martha's Vineyard in the summer and Palm Beach, Florida, in the winter. CNN has obtained invitations that listed Sanders as a host for at least one Majority Trust event in each year since 2011.

The retreats are typically attended by 100 or more donors who have either contributed the annual legal maximum of $33,400 to the DSCC, raised more than $100,000 for the party or both.

Sanders has based his presidential campaign on a fire-and-brimstone critique of a broken campaign finance system -- and of Hillary Clinton for her reliance on big-dollar Wall Street donors. But Sanders is part of that system, and has helped Democrats court many of the same donors.

1. Bernie Sanders has helped Democrats? Really? Because I've read numerous times he hasn't.

He's helped Democrats in their fundraising efforts? Democrats? Why do I keep reading Hillary helps the party, and Bernie only helps himself?

Odd, that.

On edit: I rec'd this because Bernie helping Democrats and the Democratic Party raise money is AWESOME!

The point is that they all have to raise funds. It's hypocritical to point finger at others when you too have raised money from corporations.

3. Oh, my! And he has been vilified here, by HRC supporters, as they have informed us that

Bernie never helps raise money for the DNC.

Someone, or some group, needs a due diligence fact-checker. This meme is almost funnier than the one where HRC has a law degree, Bernie does not - but Hillary FLUNKED the DC bar exam.

6. What does Hillary and the DC bar exam have to do with the OP?

Any attorney can tell you that the bar exam means squat when it comes to rating how well an attorney will perform in his/her profession. In Hillary's case, she was the one who stated that she hadn't passed the DC bar. No one discovered that fact. She also explained that at the time she was deciding whether to follow Bill to AR or to stay in DC or move to NY. She had offers from firms in both cities. She decided to take the DC bar without preparing for it and see how it went. She took not passing it as a sign to follow her heart and move to AR (Bill had asked her to marry several times by then). If she had decided to stay in DC, she would have studied and taken the bar again. Not a big deal. Besides, Hillary is often the most intelligent person in any room, does anybody really think that she wouldn't have passed it the second time around? Please...........
