Related: About this forumDemand Jonathan Capehart and the WaPo retract this lie
By Jonathan Capehart February 11 at 5:38 PM
In trying to establish the civil rights bona fides of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), many of his supporters have taken to posting a black-and-white photo of the presidential candidate from 1962. Students can be seen sitting on the floor and standing in the back as the then-dark-haired activist addresses them.
The compelling picture can be found in the senators biographical video on his campaign website. At the University of Chicago, Sanders says as the photo fades in and out, I got involved in the civil rights movement. We ended up engaging in a sit-in demonstration. Its on the campaigns Tumblr feed. As the Civil Rights Movement grew, Bernie led a sit-in to desegregate off-campus housing at the University of Chicago, reads the timeline under 1962. And Sanders used it in a stirring 2013 video to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. I remember the day very well and I remember the moment, the period well, he says as the photo passes by, because up at the University of Chicago, where I was then going to school, we were working with young people in the South.
But thats not Bernie Sanders in the photo. It is Bruce Rappaport.
<snip>
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2016/02/11/stop-sending-around-this-photo-of-bernie-sanders/
The photographer who took those photographs, world renowned photographer Danny Lyons says they damn well are Bernie.
SHAME on the WaPo and Capehart.
"In 1962 and the spring of 1963 I was the student photographer at the University of Chicago, making pictures for the yearbook, the Alumni Magazine and the student paper, The Maroon. By the summer of 1962 I had taken my camera into the deep South, and become the first photographer for SNCC.
"That winter at the University of Chicago, there was a sit-in inside the administration building protesting discrimination against blacks in university owned housing. I went to it with a CORE activist and friend. The sit in was in a crowded hallway, blocking the entrance to the office of Dr. George Beadle, the chancellor.
"I took the photograph of Bernie Sanders speaking to his fellow CORE members at that sit-in. Bob McNamara, a close friend and CORE activist, is in the very corner next to me in the picture. Across the room from me is another campus photographer named Wexler, who taught me how to develop film.
"I photographed Bernie a second time after he got a haircut, as he appeared next to the noble laureate and chancellor Dr. George Beadle. Time Magazine is now claiming it is not Bernie in the picture but someone else. It is Bernie, and it is proof of his very early dedication to justice for African Americans. The CORE sit-in that Bernie helped lead was the first civil rights sit-in to take place in the North."

(30,481 posts)Gop.com was used to smear Clinton here this morning. That same op mentioned Vince Foster and Benghazi. If Sanders supporters won't fight back against those smears I don't see a point in demanding help from Clinton supporters with this. Not even confident this is a lie.

That use to be common sense around these parts.
It's like the time when a failed wich hunt by Rep Mike Conaway was used to trash Gutierrez on Du. I'm not kidding, that was done right here on DU.
My point is this.
"Demand Jonathan Capehart and the WaPo retract this lie"
I will guarantee you didn't demand the lies be called out to the person spreading the failed investigation into Gutierrez by Mike Conaway.

The GOP's aren't going to straighten shit up for anyone. that's a fruitless endeavor you've got going on.
but if you want to actually do something about a corporate media that is lying to you while smiling and telling you that they're to be trusted, then you should.
again, GOP ain't gonna change for nobody. they're indebted to themselves.
corporate media though? they need us to make money.

(106 posts)that gop.com isn't posing itself as an objective source of truth. We're asking you to help change information in a place that does pose as that. There is a vast right wing conspiracy against the Clintons (I am sure you will be like... damn... sarcasm... this is not sarcasm - I fully believe this to be true), so why would you attempt to sway opinion in a place like that is really beyond me. Holla when WaPo starts posting things about her that claim she didn't take a specific, progressive action that she actually did take.

(10,786 posts)Sally Cook, the retired government lawyer University of Chicago alumni who contacted the University of Chicago archives to get the caption of the photo changed, conceded to Time magazine reporter Sam Frizell that she could not "say for certain the man is not Sanders."
So what made it so important to her that she felt she needed to change the caption in order to identify the individual at a 40+-year-old sit in as some long dead acquaintance rather than as Bernie Sanders?
Who then told Sam Frizell, Time magazine's Clinton pool reporter, about this trifling photo flap? What induced Sam Frizell to devote 1000 words to this complete non-story without making any attempt to contact the original photographer?
What then induced the WaPo's Jonathan Capehart, the live in partner of a rich Clinton campaign staffer, to pick up this complete non-story and spin it into a direct attack of Sanders' integrity without making any attempt to contact the original photographer?
Why did corporate cable news then trot out Capehart on 10 different shows to promulgate this complete non-story?

(7,416 posts)I lay awake in bed last night trying to iron it all our like a detective. Seems a man named Schmitt (U of C alum) was the first to make the observation re: Rappaport not Bernie in a "comment" after Rick Pearlstein's article published in the U of C Alumni magazine about a year ago.
Then some time later Sally Cook approached the U of C archive office to have the record permanently changed because, according to Capehart today, she was a "proud ex-wife" who wanted to get the record "corrected" that is the man in the photo was Bruce Rappaport, not Bernie Sanders.
That part is odd enough but how did Capehart find out about all these goings on in Chicago?

(11,366 posts)While both young men are wearing the large glasses fashionable of that day, they do NOT look alike.
Bernie is Semitic and has the classic curls that many Semitic people do. When the hair is cut short, the would-be curls create waves of hair across the head. My son is half Arabic (which is also Semitic) and has exactly that type of hair. He also wears it short and it has, you guessed it, waves across his head where the curls are snipped off.
Forget the sweater. I can tell the student on the right is the same person as the student standing up because of the HAIR.
The other student has straighter and finer hair that hangs down and doesn't "kink" up into waves.

(16,964 posts)who identified him. Bruce Rappaport is his name. Other people called the Univ. to let them know that is not Sanders.
This has been covered since the picture came out. Yesterday, Chris Matthews was asking Sanders spokesman, Devine, why they took so long to correct the Sanders ID from their website. This is now well-known who that man is, and it's not Sanders.

Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)You can assess credibility on any basis that seems reasonable to you -- but to me, that one seems ridiculous.
For my part, I did a cursory examination of two photos, the one in question and one that's of Rappaport, and concluded that they were two different people. I confess, though, that I haven't really focused on this "issue" (just as I haven't really focused on the details of the Clinton email server "issue" .
I remember that, in 2008, we had the momentous questions of whether one of Clinton's outfits showed too much cleavage, whether Edwards overpaid for a haircut, and whether Obama wrote something incriminating in a kindergarten essay. Matters don't seem to have improved in eight years.
R B Garr

You are superior to Sanders own spokesman. You are superior to all the ex-Alums of the University who callled in to say that the picture wasn't Sanders.
