2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPHOTOGRAPHER says he took the pic of Bernie leading the sit-in. I believe him.
I have been stunned to see how this has escalated. Bernie Sanders has been known for his credibility and honesty.
Do we believe the photographer or the reporters who were not there.
Bernie Sanders Leads 1963 Sit-in
That winter at the University of Chicago, there was a sit-in inside the administration building protesting discrimination against blacks in university owned housing. I went to it with a CORE activist and friend. The sit in was in a crowded hallway, blocking the entrance to the office of Dr. George Beadle, the chancellor.
I took the photograph of Bernie Sanders speaking to his fellow CORE members at that sit-in. Bob McNamara, a close friend and CORE activist, is in the very corner next to me in the picture. Across the room from me is another campus photographer named Wexler, who taught me how to develop film. I photographed Bernie a second time after he got a haircut, as he appeared next to the noble laureate and chancellor Dr. George Beadle. Time Magazine is now claiming it is not Bernie in the picture but someone else. It is Bernie, and it is proof of his very early dedication to justice for African Americans. The CORE sit-in that Bernie helped lead was the first civil rights sit-in to take place in the North.
Editing to add that the photographer used the word "slander".
SLANDER is the word civil rights photographer is using for those that question Bernie's involvement
The slander that Bernie was not a very early leader for African American civil rights got so outrageous that persons went into the archives of the University of Chicago and changed captions on Danny Lyons 1962 photos, claiming it was Bruce Rappaport standing in Bernies clothing leading the demonstration in the Ad Building. These newly discovered pictures, including close up photographs of the student activists show us exactly what Bernie was and what he remains.

(10,499 posts)Between the timing of this attack, right before SC, John Lewis's comments, the allegations the pictures were not of Bernie, and the Jonathan Capart BS, this was a coordinated, campaign level attack.
Add in the Hillary Donor's contribution to Tweety's wife's campaign for him to shill for her and you have one dirty, disgusting candidate who doesn't care who she lies to or tramples to get into office!
Do we really want another President who is willing to lie and manipulate to get us to do something to benefit her? Obviously TPTB want her badly!

(10,786 posts)Sally Cook, the retired government lawyer University of Chicago alumni who contacted the University of Chicago archives to get the caption of the photo changed, conceded to Time magazine reporter Sam Frizell that she could not "say for certain the man is not Sanders."
So what made it so important to her that she felt she needed to change the caption in order to identify the individual at a 40+-year-old sit in as some long dead acquaintance rather than as Bernie Sanders?
Who then told Sam Frizell, Time magazine's Clinton pool reporter, about this trifling photo flap? What induced Sam Frizell to devote 1000 words to this complete non-story without making any attempt to contact the original photographer?
What then induced the WaPo's Jonathan Capehart, the live in partner of a rich Clinton campaign staffer, to pick up this complete non-story and spin it into a direct attack of Sanders' integrity without making any attempt to contact the original photographer?
Why did corporate cable news then trot out Capehart on 10 different shows to promulgate this complete non-story?

(6,943 posts)...whispers are heard planting doubt that Bernie Sanders is at odds with the AA community.
Then, voila! Time Magazine says Bernie is a fraud trying to dupe the AA community with phony stories of attendance at Civil Rights events of 50 years ago.
What are the odds Bernie would be called a fraud in a Civil Rights picture, dismissed by Cong. Lewis as an invisible participant in Chicago, right after the Hillary campaign questioned his bona fides as a friend of African-Americans? What lucky timing for the Clinton campaign!

(7,006 posts)That Jonathon Capeheart said on MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Greenspan show. It was QUITE DISGUSTING saying that the Picture of Bernie Sanders at the University of Chicago was not him.
This Yellow and Black Journalism MUST BE CALLED OUT for what it is. Mitchell's Show need to go as she allowed it to go on without ONE Fact check -- just he said, she said -- with producing the he or she to state their case and Capeheart had NOTHING but what he heard without one witness -- which is NOT JOURNALISM!!!
Meanwhile, more pictures of Bernie at the University of Chicago have been found and the Photographer VERIFIES it is BERNIE SANDERS.
This Election Season is getting disgusting before it gets really started.

Actually raging maniacs often make more sense I know because I volunteered to work at a place where there were a few not exactly the psych ward, but pretty close. Anyway they were sweet people when they weren't triggered into having an episode, but Republicons are rarely sweet people. Now, Hillary is joining up with them in that place where she just sounds mean and obnoxious. Where is the Hillary that would have fought for 100% of the people in this country having medical care for free if need be? Now she has been replaced by oh well so what if 30 million people don't have insurance and so what if 25,000 will die without it and so what if other people still can't pay their deductibles and copays, they aren't important enough to fight for anymore.

(7,321 posts)she exudes that attitude with every debate and particularly palpable the other night.
With regard to the current smear John Lewis is shilling for her, obviously he's heavily invested in her taking the throne. Can you imagine what's at stake for him? A big share of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ that comes with the "job" via all manner of perks, and a special position in her cabinet. Besides, he owes her big time for going with Obama back in '08. She considered it a serious betrayal he paid for it.
Her current campaign is remarkably similar in depravity when running against Obama in 08. I'll never ever, not ever forget how she used his middle name to heavily suggest he wasn't good enough for the office, might be related to Islamic Terrorists even. Or at one point smearing his association with Ayers and the Pastor in Chicago, (can't remember his name right now).
When she did those things in '08 against Obama she was finished for me. as in forever.

(62,325 posts)diminish Sanders Civil Rights history. The photographer, known for his photos from that era has verified it. However this matter because it is everything Bernie's campaign is about. Hillary using a Super Pac secretly funded by her wealthy donors, allowing slime like David Brock to run it, AND to smear her opponents' whoever they may be, see OBama in 2008 I remember, I was there.
But this one has backfired royally because Bernie Sanders is a truly honest man, and there is NOTHING she can do that will change that in the eyes of the public
What this attempt at Swift Boating has done is diminish HER in the eyes of even more people.
Her surrogates have insulted women, AAs who are not supporting her Sanders whose long record is too well known so she could not make a dent in it, trying 'sexism' 'racism' and each time these smears have backfired. She ought to read what hundreds of thousands of people now think of her and her association with that smearmonger Brock..
I'm for keeping Brock doing what he's doing, it has HELPED Sanders make the central point of his campaign, Brock is exhibit #1 of why we must get the corrupt money out of politics.
Millions have been raised among the people as a result of Brock's multiple failed attempts to smear Sanders. I hope she doesn't fire him.

In the picture that is being contested as Bernie---he is wearing the exact same clothes that are in these four pictures of the same event.
Doesn't this provide evidence that Sanders, pictured in these 4 photos posted by Luminous, is also the same person standing up and gesticulating (the photo being contested)?
The photog says he took that pic and that it was Bernie. Bernie has been using that photo of himself throughout the campaign.

(88,117 posts)Why does Lyon refer to himself as being in the corner when in your mind he's obviously not according to his own words I posted in the OP.
Yes, the media painted it as Bernie not telling the truth about his activism.
One more thing, when someone talks condescendingly to me I respond once and no more.
Life is too short to be treated like an idiot by someone I don't even know.

Whats at issue is Sanderss misleading use of a photograph to burnish already solid credentials. For a candidate who garnered 92 percent of New Hampshire Democratic voters who said the most important trait for a candidate was that he or she be honest, the least his campaign could do is remove that photo from its Tumblr feed and stop physically placing him where he existed only in spirit.

(88,117 posts)That surprised me. The last Matthews' show You Tube has was months ago.
That would have angered me so much. I have no respect for either of them now.

(45,319 posts)his work. Neither of these shameless shills so much as picked up the phone to ask him about his own photograph, he's very famous and neither of the idiots even thought to seek him out because in their minds the photo was taken by some dirty hippie and any negatives or whatever were from a shoebox under a bed in some geezer's house instead of carefully curated and archived like the valuable American treasure it is.
John Lewis, another subject of Lyon's photos, has praised Lyon both as a photographer and as a person in the years since he has been in Congress. Capehart and Matthews both utterly unaware of this man's standing and neither they nor their staffs did a bit of due diligence before smearing him like that.
Chris Matthews = Joe McCarthy and Hardball can go fuck it's niche market cable backwater self.

(12,037 posts)Here's their recent "correction", which has another falsehood:
Update: On Feb. 11, 2016, Danny Lyon, the photographer who took the pictures of the sit-in posted photographs of Sanders at the same event. The rediscovered photos show Sanders seated and facing the camera, wearing a rough, dark sweater and a white shirt, similar to the activist in the disputed photo. Lyon said all the photos are in the same series, leading him to conclude that Sanders is the man in question.
Because of the outtakes, the pictures taken before the next picture, I deduced that it was him, Lyon said. Did these guys switch sweaters or something? Its Bernie. Lyon does not remember taking the photo.

Here's Danny Lyon's response (on his blogsite):

This is Danny Lyon. Of course I remember taking the photos! That is not what I said on the phone to the Time reporter.
I went with Bob McNamara, a CORE activist and good friend. It was in a hall way, very crowded, so I stood in the corner. I did not sit. I shot Bernie standing (he was speaking when I got there.) I shot him sitting down. He sits next to McNamara, who is wearing glasses Then I, standing above them, shoot the three close ups of Bernie, still in his sweater, speaking with his buddies

(1,890 posts)I have been stunned to see how this has escalated. Bernie Sanders has been known for his credibility and honesty. - madfloridian
As have a lot of us but it shouldn't come as a surprise when we remember this.
Exit Polls: New Hampshire Democrats Trust Sanders
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders won the New Hampshire Democratic primary after convincing voters he is more honest and trustworthy than Hillary Clinton, pointing to a potential liability for the former secretary of state as the race for president moves to Nevada and South Carolina, according to exit poll results.

It's clearly an effort to bring his numbers down to her level to mitigate her liability. It just sickens me.

Correct. This is Danny Lyon He called me and asked to record me, which I agreed to. His main interest seemed to be to ask things like when did the campaign contact me (they hadnt).
His only interest was in the idea that there was some kind of conspiracy to either undermine him, or created by
the Sanders campaign. It was a bazaar conversation, that I almost regret having. He recorded me for at least
half an hour. If he was a journalist he would immediately publish the truth, or at least admit
that he spoke with the person that made the pictures, and admit that other pictures now show that this is Bernie Sanders as a young activist.

Bernie with his son, who seems to have inherited Bernie's hands.
Obviously, also Bernie, but shorn of his curls and sideburns
The "mystery" man, in the same outfit and with the same haircut and glasses as Bernie--all sheer coincidence, no doubt.
Bottom line: it's frickin' irrelevant.
