Hillary Clinton brought this on herself: How a Democratic primary coronation turned into a war

"She is arguing that we ought not be seduced by Bernie’s rhetoric because we must be “pragmatic,” “face political realities,” and not get tempted to believe that we can fight for economic justice and win. When politicians start telling you that it is “unrealistic” to support candidates who want to build a movement for greater equality, fair wages, universal healthcare, and an end to corporate control of our political system, it’s probably best to leave the room."

But they never expected to have a significant challenge in the primary, hence why she wasn't concerned about the speeches and TPP. She might have thought there would be a tepid O'Malley challenge, or a gadfly liberal candidate in the mold of Kucinich.

I laugh when they say they always thought this race would tighten. Once Warren signaled she wasn't open to running, they thought it was in the bag. They were badly mistaken.
