When I saw Cynthia McKinney introduced by Bernie, I was reminded of a couple of Bernie stories
I've been reviewing Sanders record in congress. Very early on, he/they formed the "progressive caucus" (I think) for non-blacks to join with the black caucus. So far, in my review of the congressional record, he stuck with them ever since. That's how he got connected with Cynthia. Here's a little evidence of that:

Bernie Sanders - The Only White Guy to Show Up...
Thom Hartmann interview with Greg Palast. Palast is an investigative journalist who has done stories on voting issues including the Bush-Gore Florida fiasco. They identified another voting problem in 2000 in Florida with thousands of black votes being thrown out. In 2004, another voting issue for blacks arose and the black caucus called an emergency meeting inviting all members of the House to attend and maybe help them out. Bernie Sanders was the only white representative to show up. (starts roughly 1 min in)
