Related: About this forumBernie Sanders Just Got A HUGE Native American Endorsement
Bernie Sanders just received a major endorsement from the legendary activist, environmentalist, economist, and, in my opinion, one of coolest people ever Winona LaDuke
LaDukes endorsement of Bernie Sanders came in the form of a video where she praised Sanders vision for a fossil-free future:
Our lands as indigenous lands are the place where most of the oil and gas, and a good portion of the uranium and coal comes from. The easiest answer for the future generations is to keep it in the ground. And we are thankful for Bernie Sanders for saying Lets #keepitintheground. Dont make a mess we cant clean up, LaDuke said.
For those not familiar with LaDukes history, she is an indigenous American who has worked tirelessly fighting for tribal rights and sustainable development. Winona LaDuke is an Anishinaabekwe (Ojibwe) enrolled member of the Mississippi Band Anishinaabeg. After graduating from Harvard, LaDuke has spent her career writing about issues that hurt indigenous groups and the environment. LaDuke currently works as the Director of Honor the Earth.

It is not surprising that LaDuke has decided to endorse Sanders for president. Sanders has an ambitious plan to completely transform the United States energy infrastructure. Whats really great about Sanders keep it in the ground strategy, is that so much of it can be accomplished without the approval of Congress.
The president of the United States has the authority to prevent the State Department from granting leases to fossil fuel companies if they want to extract dirty fuels from federal land. President Obama recently used this power to put a quasi-moratorium on leases for coal mines. As president, Sanders would also be able to not give leases to companies who wish to build pipelines across international borders.
One aspect of Sanders energy plan should be of particular interest to both racial justice groups, environmentalists, and those who work in their intersection. Sanders recognizes the disparity of the impact fossil fuel extraction and usage has on indigenous peoples and communities of color. Thats why he supports legislation that would work to halt the devastation fossil fuels are causing while creating millions of new jobs. Sanders co-sponsored the Keep It in the Ground Act last year. When he did he released a video explain why we need to transform our nations energy system.

(10,336 posts)I forgot that I had dismissed it. I apologize. And no, I'm not implying anything. I just had filed that one in the "we will never know" file in my brain. Again, sorry.

(9,497 posts)The Ojibwa have the 7 prophecies.
http://www.wabanaki.com/seven_fires_prophecy.htm
"In the time of the Seventh Fire New People will emerge. They will retrace their steps to find what was left by the trail. Their steps will take them to the Elders who they will ask to guide them on their journey. But many of the Elders will have fallen asleep. They will awaken to this new time with nothing to offer. Some of the Elders will be silent because no one will ask anything of them. The New People will have to be careful in how they approach the Elders. The task of the New People will not be easy.
"If the New People will remain strong in their quest the Water Drum of the Midewiwin Lodge will again sound its voice. There will be a rebirth of the Anishinabe Nation and a rekindling of old flames. The Sacred Fire will again be lit.
"It is this time that the light skinned race will be given a choice between two roads. If they choose the right road, then the Seventh Fire will light the Eighth and final Fire, an eternal fire of peace, love brotherhood and sisterhood. If the light skinned race makes the wrong choice of the roads, then the destruction which they brought with then in coming to this country will come back at them and cause much suffering and death to all the Earth's people."
I chose Bernie.

Just as the government came at 3-4AM to force the Apache and others off of their land, in the Trail of Tears, the government came in the early morning to take the children to the King's Canyon School in a bid for force assimilation to Western European culture.
The bonds of the Hopi are strong and, while the children eventually accepted their schooling, many returned to their community.

(9,497 posts)But they had Indian School with many different tribes. His parents died two years apart by influenza and he was orphaned at 6. They were forced into assimulation. I remember him talking about the priests, working the farms and getting beaten if he didn't work hard enough. He didn't go home often, because his parents were dead but my brother remembers him talking briefly about his grandmother being drunk. He ran away and joined the Navy at 16.

If you ever saw the Australian movie "Rabbit Proof Fence" about the Aboriginals, you would be familiar with this scenario.

(14,912 posts)Thank you ALL so very much! I usually don't reply to each individual response with a "Thank You" or anything because it can seem monotonous and insincere after a few, and also like a way to just build up my post count. I certainly don't mean to offend anyone by saying that, it's just my own way, and opinion.
I appreciate everyone who took the time to read, reply and/or rec this post....
