It is really horrible that Sanders wants to attend a conference on Social and Economic Justice

Last edited Fri Apr 8, 2016, 04:20 PM - Edit history (1)

It's fine for Clinton to spend her time at private fund raising gatherings with ridiculously high costs of admission and which are organized and attended by Mega Rich and Powerful Elites, including Corporate and Wall St. Oligarchs.

Some people have really strange value systems.

It brings attention to the issues that both the Pope and Bernie care so deeply about. And it focuses on the issues that Hillary and the Third Way really don't give a crap about.

I don't see any real blame in either camp. Once again, it's added friction caused by media's lack of accuracy.

(I see absolutely nothing to criticize in attending this conference in terms of values etc).

the most precious commodity in a campaign is the candidate's time.

and they're taking him out of New York right after the debate, and sacrificing at least one day out of the four remaining before the primary.

to me, this indicates that New York is not looking to be very close--if it was neck and neck I'd expect him to be living here--it's a big state with lots of places to visit. In which case this event attendance makes a lot of sense.

But that's only my personal intuition.

My guess is that his campaign probably had some internal discussions about the pros and cons, but Bernie decided it was an opportunity too good to pass up...Sanders REALLY does sincerely admire the Pope and his goals on the issues he cares about.

(And maybe he also wanted a break from the bullshit of campaigning for a couple of days).

Both are - in a way - campaigning. More so, than when a candidate has to leave the campaign trail for a private fund raiser. (This is not intended as an attack on Clinton. This was the norm for decades because that was how to get a lot of money and campaigns needed a lot of money.)

I assume that papers across the country and the broadcast media will cover Bernie going to the Vatican. It could lead to conversation's of the Pope's encyclical visa vi the Sanders message on the 99% vs 1%. All in all, it could be a toss up whether another - no matter how large - Bernie rally and this could drive votes here and in the upcoming states. It should be noted that many that are coming up have a significant Catholic population.

Though it is very very possible that there will be absolutely no Bernie and Pope photo op at all, just the fact that the Catholic Press is very likely to cover this and connect that conference to the Pope's message could make many who might be threatened by the words, "democratic socialist" to see that what the Pope is advocating might be an even more radical version of what Bernie is for.

Both will be at their respective events @ the same amount of time.

Then both will fly home.

Neither will lose any significant campaign time.

Bernie however gets global press for attending a Vatican conference and speaking on a moral economy ahead of primary states that have very significant percentages of Catholics.

Hillary will be noted for attending a fundraising soiree with her 1% peeps.

Time well spent for Bernie!

The latter is awfully expensive.

Flight time is more like 9 hours from JFK to FCO.

Plus the time zone difference, if he leaves at midnight from JFK he arrives at 3:30 PM in the afternoon in Rome.

Say he stays there for 6.50 hours, so he flies back at 10:00 PM Rome time on the 15th, he arrives back in New York on the 16th at 1:00 AM.

So either way he gives up his entire day of the 15th to put in a 6 hours appearance in Italy.

And that's assuming he has his own private jet that leaves and takes off according to his schedule, with no weather or runway delays.

Stop spreading disinformation.

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-vatican-idUSKCN0X5257

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to speak at an April 15 Vatican event by the Vatican, a senior papal official said on Friday, denying a report that Sanders had invited himself.

"I deny that. It was not that way," Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event.

He said it was his idea to invite Sanders.

Sanders, who’s made economic disparities the centerpiece of his campaign, earlier on Friday said, “this is an invitation from the Vatican, from a pope that I have enormous respect for in term of the level of consciousness that he’s raising on the need to have morality in our economy.”

But the office of the pope moved quickly to distance the pontiff from the visit. Father Federico Lombardi, the Pope’s spokesman, said Sanders had been invited “not by the pope but by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.” Lombardi told the Italian news agency Ansa: “For the moment there is no expectation that there will also be a meeting with the pope.”
