This isn't insulting to point out, it's just how politicians get elected. The voters' fault if you want to dislike something. Why should we be so swayed by these posturings that politicians are obliged to produce them?

(57,349 posts)VATICAN CITY/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to speak at an April 15 Vatican event by the Vatican, a senior papal official said on Friday, denying a report that Sanders had invited himself.
"I deny that. It was not that way," Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event.
He said it was his idea to invite Sanders.
A Bloomberg report quoted Margaret Archer, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, as saying that Sanders had broken with protocol by failing to contact her office first.
"This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus," said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.

What I find amazing is how remote sanders is from the subject and purpose of the conference he's attending. It's not some social or economic policy conference, it's an internal discussion on ecumenical issues.
This is pure, naked pandering which was called out with perfection by the academy president in her remarks.
What's even more amazing are all of these posts quoting Vatican sources as if that's some institution known for truthfulness. Ask survivors of molestation by priests about their credibility.

(9,527 posts)Kim Davis was trying to spin meeting the Pope to justify her hatred for gay people. Sanders is at worst exaggerating (or as I think is more likely speaking slightly inaccurately on this) his presence at a conference that is on a subject close to the heart of his campaign.

(2,074 posts)I'm quite convinced that there's a bit of drama going on in the Vatican right now. The pope does not like being used for party political agendas, even though his own overall agenda of course has serious political ramifications. In many ways Bernie's platform (and the Democratic platform in general) has a lot of overlap with Catholic Social Teaching, so I'm glad this highlights that overlap. Under the two previous popes the more conservative parts of Catholic Social Teaching (stuff about gender and abortion etc.) tended to be emphasized, so this makes for good balance.
It seems that Jeffrey Sachs lobbied for Bernie to be invited to this conference, and that they then invited him, so both the statement that he initiated it, and the statement that they invited him, is in a certain sense true. And in many ways it is very appropriate for him to go, given his political emphasis. The problem, however, lies in the fact that he is currently locked in a heated primary battle, and that his public announcement about this event made it sound as if he had been invited by the Pope himself to discuss social matters at the Vatican. Given that huge primaries in states with large Catholic populations are lying ahead this month, this amounts to give the impression that the Vatican is choosing sides in the Democratic primary, putting their finger on the scale. And as such, Bernie's misleading statements on this on national television amounts to using the Vatican for political gain. And that is deeply problematic, both in terms of the Democratic primary process, and in terms of the Vatican's own political infighting.
Inviting Bernie to a conference at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences is one thing. Inviting Bernie in the heat of the primary battle, and him giving the false impression that he was invited by the Pope and might even be meeting with the Pope, is quite another.
Tarc
(10,476 posts)It sounds like this Margaret Archer is the one who is running this conference and is usually, obviously, in the know about who the attendees are. This invitation seems to have originated one level up, with Monsignor Sorondo, though which side initiated the invitation is still up in the air.
Nonhlanhla
(2,074 posts)I'm pretty sure there was no ill intent in the original plans to invite Bernie (after Sachs' request), and in the end it does not matter whether Bernie/Sachs initiated it. The problem is the context of the primaries and Bernie's misrepresentation of it this week, and the PR nightmare this is causing the Vatican, which is what Margaret Archer was responding to. It does politicize the event in a way that I'm pretty sure has upset a lot of folks in the Vatican, and it does insert the Vatican into US politics in a way that is very, very uncomfortable.

(1,235 posts)when I saw Sanders announce his trip?
It wasn't about rubbing anything in anyone's face. It was "that's great news, I wonder what they're going to be talking about" (yes, on first hearing what he announced, from his own mouth, I misunderstood that this was a meeting with the Pope ... but I checked later and it was just me assuming the the mention of the Vatican had to mean 'Pope'.)
When I found out that it was a conference on economics and the environment, the closest thing to a mean thought I had about Hillary was "I hope Hillary is going to so she can learn something about the problems from a perspective other than just a 'political' perspective."
Then I look at what the (minority) petty little Hillary supporters are doing ... I spent a day, like other Bernie supporters, trying to correct the record being spewed ... the only thing that is even slightly true so far is that ONE TIME, out the the dozen or so times he announced and was asked about the trip, he gave 'untrue' information, he responded 'yep' on a day time entertainment talk show, when they said "you're going to visit the Pope' .... IF there was any "serious' misstatements made, they were corrected immediately, if anyone was fooled it was for only 5 minutes ... but after almost 2 days now it's been a steady stream of the same bullshit over and over again.
Yes, you better believe that now I'm just going to make fun of conspiracy-crack-pots . That's really that is deserved
