Related: About this forum#PapalGate was supposed to be the Friday news drop
A glorious WEEKEND of attacking Bernies credibility, hammering away at his "trustworthiness", that elusive thing that he has and Hillary doesn't, but you damn Sanders supporters debunked #PapalGate far too quickly. Even MSNBC just did their mea culpa on it ("looks like he was invited, but it's not like tea and crumpets with the Pope, he's just going to speak) and has been forced to swivel back to last weeks #QualificationGate. Luckily for them there's Lock Up.
Are you happy with yourselves?

(14,195 posts)From HuffPo: Heres what he told protesters at a campaign rally for Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia:
They say the welfare reform bill increased poverty. Then why did we have the largest drop in African American poverty in history when I was president? The largest in history. What happened was, all these Republicans got into the Supreme Court elected President Bush 5 to 4, then all these Republicans took over state legislatures. We left em with enough money to take care of all the poor people who couldnt go to work on welfare. We left em with the money they had before the welfare rolls went down 60 percent. The Republicans took it away, and [these protesters are] blaming me.
This is not true. Poverty dropped during the Clinton years not because of welfare reform, but because the entire American economy was being juiced by a massive stock market bubble. No credible economist even disputes this. The Clinton bubble was fueled by the aggressive financial deregulatory policies of Clinton and his Federal Reserve chairman, Alan Greenspan. When the stock market bubble burst, millions of people who previously would have received welfare fell into poverty.
Welfare reform was an intentional effort to curb financial assistance to poor people, on the grounds that many were simply too lazy to get a job. Clinton turned over a federal program to states, who were effectively allowed to slash welfare funding and impose new work requirements on people who received assistance. Even Republican co-architects of welfare reform concede that the program ended up hurting the poor.

(11,065 posts)Rather interesting really. Any priest can use it after their name/signature, but bishops or the equivalent put it in front of their name/signature.

"All bishops sign their names with a single cross, i.e., +, before their name. Archbishops may alternatively use a double patriarchal cross, i.e., , but should not use two single crosses, i.e., ++."

(59,504 posts)1) Bernie is going to the Vatican - The conference is in the small area included in the Vatican
2) The Pope first encyclical had a huge amount to say about income inequality -- and, if anything, he is more radical in what he recommends than Bernie. You might want to read it.
3) Bernie cares about income inequality and has spoken of that for decades.

Now, let me clearly say, this is simply a guess. That is what we do when we do not have facts. Guess. But, you asked. That is my conclusion.

(7,820 posts)Most Sanders supporters I know are well aware of the odds stacked against him/us. They know he doesn't have a magic wand. But they'd rather support someone who is right on the issues and who will fight for them and make the case. They think the system's broken and do not think Hillary is the one to address that fact since the Clintons were a big part of getting us where we're at now.
I am so over this bullshit that Bernie supporters are dumb or that we don't get the reality of the situation. We do. We just aren't willing to throw up our hands and say "Oh well. Guess this fucked up mess is the best we can do"
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)Democrats and so much more, TDale. Not when they refuse to ask if he has a viable plan and use fabrication as a test for Clinton being progressive enough, when reality says, it can't be done. Not when he has used the Iraq deaths to have them attack Clinton being responsible for dead babies, and then Sanders declaring of course she is not responsible. That was just a tit for tat thing.
They USE these reasons to NOT vote a Democrat.
Not good enough and it does not serve out youth well.
TDale313
(7,820 posts)And yes, we can and must do better. And no, the Democratic party is not always right and has helped let money corrupt the process. And no, I'm not over Hillary's Iraq War Vote or how she campaigned in '08 or how she's campaigning this time or the millions Wall Street has funneled (all legally) her direction.
The primaries are where we hash out where we want the party to go. I (and apparently nearly half the party) really want to see it clean up its act. It is not disloyal to say so. I've been an active Democrat my entire life. That's why I demand they be better than this.
