(6,123 posts)..in real life have called me a Bernie Bro and have asked if I drank the kool-aid. What amazes me the most is that the woman has said that the name calling has gotten horrible. Problem is her and her husband are the ones doing the name calling.
She has also said that she doesn't think it's fair that Hillary is judged on her looks or what she wears. In the next sentence she will say she can't support Bernie because his hair is messy or she doesn't like his suits. I asked if we were electing a president or looking for a prom date. Keep in mind she is 60 years old.

(14,341 posts)why are you even trying to "keep track" of anybody?
We could eliminate a lot of the trouble without all of the gossipy meta nonsense.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)But the people running around here lately, the ones with 8...9... 20 hides on their pages, gleefully attempting to out-do each other in terms of flat out insulting the Sanders supporters here and then laughing because "ha ha skinner wont give us a time out anymore neeener neeeener"
....yeah, they're sort of hard to miss.
Bobbie Jo
(14,341 posts)It's gossipy meta and really no more righteous than the behavior you're describing.
Y'all devote entire subthreads to this nonsense.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)you would understand it better.
Bobbie Jo
(14,341 posts)I would agree with you.
It's not...
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)As for "no more better than the behavior you describe"-- that's rich. I haven't had a hide in something like 3 years, and it's not because I've been a sanders supporter for the last 6 months of them.
It's because I don't call people names, tell them to "eff off", tell them they don't have jobs, hippie punch them, etc etc etc etc.
The good thing about the "transparency page all-stars" I mentioned is that, even though they don't get time outs anymore, people can still see the shit they got their hides for. And while some of the hides are arguably not deserved, a lot of them are for pretty nasty comments.
Bobbie Jo
(14,341 posts)Sorry I interrupted the festivities.
Look, we've ALL read this crap here for months on end. Bottom line, you have a narrative and you're sticking to it.
Carry on.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)But again, the people celebrating are the ones who can now fling the lowest, nastiest shit at their fellow DU members all day long with abandon and not get penalized with a time out.
Bobbie Jo
(14,341 posts)Like I said, we've ALL been reading what has been going on here.
This is your version of events, I get that.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)But i really do have other shit to do.
Yes, its my version, and it is something like this-
one side criticizes Hillary Clinton, sometimes unfairly, sometimes over the top. Absolutely.
The other side spends an inordinate of time going on about
"racist sexist unemployed berniebros living in parents basement pot smoking volvo driving hipster mac using rand paul libertarian right wing communist (i know, wtf?) susan sarandon aeeeeee stupid millennials arggghhhhhh and #%}#}#}# you >#^<*%*<*< #%###%>>## go #%#%###%% yourselves you #%#%#%#%#%#ing Pony wanting #%#%#%#%%# and did we mention berniebroooooooooos warggghhhhllllllll!!!!!!!"
Bobbie Jo
(14,341 posts)For all of those examples you think you have, take that number and multiply it by 10, then you'll be close to the multitude of nastiness that has been thrown at Hillary supporters here for the past 9+ months.
Hides don't mean diddly squat in the current environment, that's why Skinner put an end to the time out nonsense that you're complaining about to no end. People weren't (and still aren't) even trying to do the right thing when it comes to jurying posts. Skinner even said so himself.
I could also provide examples, but I have shit to do myself. The list you just gave pales in comparison to the sheer nastiness hurled in the other direction. I would post one such example, but it would get hidden, as others who have tried to post this person's filth found out the hard way. This person is still here, btw... It wasn't hidden, and he was even so PROUD of it that he saved it to his damn journal, FFS.
So don't even try to claim victim status in this mess, because it isn't even close.
I'll leave you with the last word. Like I said, these vicious subthreads amount to nothing more than perpetuating the gossip. I'll leave you to it.

(45,319 posts)for acting like 'King George' is a tradition exactly as old as the Presidency. The red baiting lexicon is fresh and new from the late 40's and 50's. Terms like 'comrade' come from Cold War times and have been used against regular citizens as well as those in power. My own mentors include good persons who were greatly burdened by blacklisting and other aspects of the times reflected in that lexicon and words like 'comrade'.
'Princess' is generic royal, Princess of Wales of Monaco, Princess Buttercup, Diana, Liea and Peach are all Princesses, there are many, many Disney Princesses and 'princess dress' or 'princess phone' have specific meanings.
'Comrade' is Soviet specific, a term used only by a nation the US saw as the enemy. Use of 'comrade' in the US is limited to Soviet flavored snark.
The US has a nasty history of Red Baiting in our living memories, our rejection of royalty was absolute and long ago.
Thus 'Princess' = Ally, perhaps spoiled but good and 'Comrade' = Enemy, perhaps congenial but scheming.
Also, Red Baiting and Jew Baiting are very often close traveling companions in the US, so is Red Baiting and Homophobia. See all those 'religious freedom' laws? See all the folks attacking Bernie for being Jewish?
The two words are not in the same class at all. I think I've made my case.

(4,407 posts)Hillary doesn't actually change direction. When she jumped on the bandwagon about free trade agreements, she wasn't going to actually change her behavior. She just talked about it. She saw some voters that she wanted to consume and said what she needed to, but that's all.
Her true direction remains unchanged, which is to do whatever it takes for her to enrich herself. Hillary's words aren't a good guide to her behavior.

I'm straight, and I would love to see an openly gay president one day. But that doesn't mean I would support any corrupt, corporatist candidate just because he or she is gay. I won't. And I would be deeply offended if anybody accused me of being a homophobe.
It's not what liberals do -falsely accusing others of bigotry. Because if you're a liberal, then you should know how offensive it is to be falsely accused of bigotry, because bigot is the last thing you ever want to be.

Bad Dog
(2,025 posts)Funny how we were able to joke about with the Mexicans while most of our jokes went over the American's heads. Not all of them mind you, and definitely not the black Americans, but there were a lot of white Americans who just could not communicate with people from other countries. It was like something was missing from them.

If Americans are reviled, and it's not nearly as bad as you suggest, it's down to their behaviour and sense of entitlement. It's got very little to do with people like me who have the audacity to comment on it.
redruddyred
(1,615 posts)i think you're shifting the topic from "intl people think hillary is a mess" to "american travellers are cunts", but i'll engage.

You said that people like me were the reason Americans were supposedly reviled around the World. I replied with it's more to do with the behaviour of Americans, (and your penchant for invading countries,) that was the cause.
It's not just Mexico, it'll all over. In the bazaars in Istanbul they have three prices below which they won't go depending on who they're haggling with. The lowest price is for locals, the middle price is for tourists, and the highest for American tourists.

(2,025 posts)You were the one who brought up the topic of anti American. Which was undoubtedly brought about by the typically arrogant assumption that everyone on the internet is an American, coupled with your inability to understand basic English.

redruddyred

Bad Dog
(2,025 posts)Your ambivalent attitude towards two truly dangerous men is what could enable one of them to steal the election.
As far as Clinton/Sanders goes I don't care who wins. Unfortunately for Sanders a lot of racist and sexist language has been coming from those who claim to support him.
Clinton is not stupid, she won't invade a country on a whim like Bush. Her husband was instrumental in the NI peace process which means he is incredibly popular over here.
redruddyred
(1,615 posts)trump isn't stupid either. should we elect him?
the berniebro myth is just that. i see a lot of derogatory, aggressive behavior coming from the hillary camp, and that emphatically includes your own. should i paint you all with the same broad brush? plenty of middle class older women who protested in the second feminist wave and want their woman president. should i call them names too?
Bad Dog
(2,025 posts)I am not from the Clinton camp. I've made my position clear, yet you're so fanatically partisan you assume anyone who's not like you is a rabid Clinton supporter. It's a simple fact that the term bro is no way near as demeaning as hag, but you'd rather blub about being called a bro.

I don't particularly care how long hours Americans work, like I don't care about the way you fund your health care. (I've known the NHS all my life btw, I don't pay to go to hospital.) What I do care about it our soldiers, and our military bases being used in another one of America's imperialist adventures.
Getting upset about being called gringo is a bit sad btw.
redruddyred
(1,615 posts)they're both offensive, sexist & ageist. sorry, but i think your sympathies betray you.
"gringo" is representative of the general contempt our neighbors south of the border seem to hold for us. there is a reason why trump has so much power right now, and it's because he's tapping into something that's real. i don't support his candidacy, but you cannot assert point blank that race relations are a oneway street. the people who support him are truly feeling threatened by the influx of immigration from the south and the dismissal of their concerns by the bourgeois set is not helping matters. why dyou supposed that talk radio has so much success with the "liberal elite" meme?
i'm sick of our foreign adventures too. we have that in common.
Bad Dog
(2,025 posts)Mexico is paying the price for America's love of guns and illegal drugs. Using Gringo doesn't seem like an over the top response to that sort of thing. It's not that offensive either, it just means foreigner. It's no way near as bad as rhyming slang.

(1,615 posts)i, and many others are not the "america" you speak of who is driving this market
the trouble is they direct their aggression towards the working class folk who are not complicit, as the ones who are the problem could easily retaliate. in short, they are misguided and therefore racist.
and it's not a one-time namecalling, it's constant passive aggression. as you have pointed out, the name itself means nothing.
i understand the context, which is explicitly why i do not support donald trump's candidacy. but at the same time the white working class folk, who are not employing the illegal immigrants as slave labor are bearing the brunt of having their cultural milieu disrupted.
i know i'm speaking in generalizations here; i honestly like majority of latin americans; believe me i have more than enough criticisms of my own culture, but the whole mass immigration dynamic is just a race to the bottom facilitated by the ceos and their government cronies. the answer is solidarity, but that's impossible when your coworker is a ignorant macho "la raza" asshole with a real "fuck you gringo" attitude.

So far I've been able to determine that you have no problems with calling women hags but you get very upset about being called a bro or a gringo. You like Latin Americans apart from those you have to work with and that's because they're racist. And you're quite free and easy with the C word.
redruddyred
(1,615 posts)i don't see the point when you wilfully twist my arguments. you're capable of reading, i think.
you know, and i know, that "bro" is a smear to discredit the sanders campaign. it's offensive to those who are not young men. it's offensive to those who are young men, and have made the conscious choice to be be involved in politics, and not on the republican side. if hillary's surrogates want to make sexist, ageist slurs, they shouldn't be upset when someone returns the favor.
i'm not sure why i'm even saying all this tho; it's a waste of breath.

Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Another abuse of Alert. The OP is about the Bernie Bro label, which, like Obama Boys, is supposed to convey that only males support Bernie and that said males don't want to support a woman, two lies. Discussing labels that could be used to insult Hillary supporters the way that Bernie Bro insults supporters of Bernie--especially women--is fair in the context of the OP. The discussion is hypothetical. No one is being called any of those names--except, of course, that Bernie Bros and BSers are actually being used all over DU. If you can't stand to see even a hypothetical insult, stay off the thread.

Obnoxious partying males who are often seen at college parties. When they arent making an ass of themselves they usually just stand around holding a red plastic cup waiting for something exciting to happen so they can scream something that demonstrates how much they enjoy partying. Nearly everyone in a fraternity is a bro but there are also many bros who are not in a fraternity. They often wear a rugby shirt and a baseball cap. It is not uncommon for them to have spiked hair with frosted tips.
Bros actually chose this name for themselves as they often refer to each other as "bro" even though they are not related.
I couldn't go to sleep last night because some bros at the party next door kept screaming, "Whoooooo!!! YEAAHHHHH! Whooooooo!"
Hag
1. An unattractive, middle-aged (or slightly older) woman. The term is commonly used to describe hysterical or ugly women in positions of power.
2. A mean, spiteful old woman that likes to constantly reprimand/torture the younger portion of the human race. Usually associated with witches and strict librarians.

2. An alpha male idiot. This is the derogatory sense of the word (common usage in the western US): white, 16-25 years old, inarticulate, belligerent, talks about nothing but chicks and beer, drives a jacked up truck thats plastered with stickers, has rich dad that owns a dealership or construction business and constantly tells this to chicks at parties, is into extreme sports that might be fun to do but are uncool to claim (wakeboarding, dirt biking, lacrosse), identifies excessively with brand names, spends a female amount of money on clothes and obsesses over his appearance to a degree that is not socially acceptable for a heterosexual male. The female equivalent of the Bro is the Bro Hoe. Bro Hoes are Bro groupies that hang around bros, many of whom are actually quite hot and are thus spared the scorn that is heaped on Bros.

I know I don't fit the description, not just because I'm a woman and middle aged, but because I'm not a "Bernie wonderful, Hillary horrible" person. I'm more of a "Bernie good, Hillary good, but Bernie better" voter.
Anyway the point is that BernieBro was never intended to describe all Bernie supporters, only a stereotype of them, and the stereotype assumes male, among other things. I assume HillBot also describes a stereotype of Hillary supporters (who support everything she says no matter what it is? Not sure but that is what "HillBot" makes me think of.)

(3,569 posts)To ho. (As in "Bros or hos" ... But I wasn't brave enough to ask here... Hag is probably just as offensive I think. But so is bro. Or is it?
I don't know. What is too offensive? I hate being considered a " bro" .. But I have learned to live with it.

(5,514 posts)Bro is not a term of endearment. When young people refer to others as "bros" they are equating them to stereotypical "frat boy", misogynistic MRA types. The use of the word toward Bernie supporters is so very clearly not a compliment. It doesn't even make sense to claim otherwise. Has anyone here honestly seen someone label another person as a BernieBro when they weren't trying to be insulting?
