2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo Bernie apologized. Now the outrage will shift to outrage at us supporters? Are you guys for real?
This is GDP, it is about the primaries and not about the supporters.
I submit that any thread discussing "supporters" is by definition meta and that it be treated as such.

Presumably, by dint of the Thomas connection,
those who foisted GW upon us.
thats the facts jack.

(27,787 posts)Here's the problem I think you face.
The correct move for Bernie supporters is to follow Bernie's lead. Denounce and reject the terms used, and say they are not appropriate.
Sanders supporters on this site WANT to use that term in reference to Hillary. And plenty of them WANT Bernie to use those terms too. You can find them in the various threads today.
The endless reflexive attacks on Hillary have been going on at DU for months now. I'll be surprised to see Bernie's most agitated supporters on this site backing away from that term and "dropping" discussion of it.
They want to use it.

(29,257 posts)The truth is that, as a concept, I fully agree that the politicians that are in it for money deserve to be called bad names.
Now, on a personal level, I do not think women should be called whores.
But "corporate whores" really refers to a specific thing.
While I can understand that on a personal level calling someone a whore IS offensive, I do not want the phrase "corporate whore" to be forced into retirement. It is supposed to be a term of shame.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)See ... that is what plenty of Bernie supporters on this site are now pushing for.
This isn't an abstract discussion of the term. Its a discussion of its actual use and application targeting a specific person. A female democrat.
Do you think Bernie will defend the term at the debate? How about its use in regards to Hillary?
If, as you indicate, the term is fine to use as a "term of shame" ... in the debate, Bernie would need to (a) make that same argument (its ok to use that term at times), and then (b) make a statement as to whether that "term of shame" should be applied to Hillary.
How do you think that would go?
Bonobo
(29,257 posts)"Medicare for all will never happen as long as we continue to elect corporate Democratic whores who are beholden to Big Pharma."
How is that applied to Hillary in this instance? I don't get how you can claim it is "calling Hillary a whore"?
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)And I think you are correct, Bernie should not argue that the term is OK to use, and he should not argue that it is correctly applied to Hillary. His campaign would end 10 seconds later.
Many of his supporters on this site do not get that. The think the term is ok to use, and they think it should be applied to Hillary.
Which is why this topic really won't go away .... they WANT to use it and apply it to Hillary.

(5,792 posts)will take up all the time to comment. He didn't say it. He said it was inappropriate. Enough. Bernie had thousands and thousands last night. The streets around the park (as the Fire Marshall would not let them in so it was full) had thousands. If that crowd was not more than 27,000 then someone does not want to really know how many were there.

I don't have the direct quote and haven't seen it, but I am told that he used the term in a general sense to refer to politicians that are for sale.
