2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDan Rather said something in his gut
Tells him that it will be a good day for Romney. He said Romney will get his vote out. He said he does not think Obama will be able to get his vote out. Add him to my shit list. Let's prove him WRONG!

http://www.statesmanjournal.com/article/20121104/OPINION/311040038/Dan-Rather-s-election-prediction
There is a consensus that Romney will get his out. The question is can Obama get out his. Republicans got their voters to the polls in the 2010 off-year Congressional elections, fueled by detestation of Obama among the faithful, and they crushed. Obama got an unusually strong turnout in 2008, especially among the young and most especially among young women. Whether or not he can do that again, or come close, could be decisive. Itll matter most in the swing states, Ohio and the others.
Money matters, as it always does, and Romney has more money than Obama to spend down the stretch for advertising to persuade late-deciders and to maximize turnout of his base.
So whos going to win? I can be dumb as a fencepost about a lot of things, but Im not so dumb as to make a prediction this near to the finish in a race as close as this one appears to be.
At this juncture, it looks dead even in the national popular vote, with a slight edge for President Obama in the Electoral College math. So, bottom line: as of this date, advantage Obama. But I wouldnt bet the rent money either way.

(5,008 posts)I do know what he said this morning . He did not say that to Rachel last night. That is why I wondered if he said it because he was with Joe. It was right after Heileman gave a great report about the confidence of the Obama team.

(46,192 posts)i'm a big fan of Rather, but doesn't mean he is always right and doesn't mean i agree with all he says.
anyway, he also said something like, "yeah but you bet on facts not your gut and the facts suggest Obama is going to win" (from memory, bear with me).
so there's that.

(827 posts)Not racism. They really just can't comprehend how anyone names Obama could potentially have won two landslide elections and demolished a war hero and a successful businessman. Until it happens they still won't understand it

(2,730 posts)bottomline is Romney is depending on getting over 60 percent of the white vote. Most National Polls predict President Obama will get below 40 percent of white voters. I disagree with that. This is the Republican Party's last Hurrah with that strategy.Rather is depending on minority voters not to get out and vote. So far, that theory has been crushed in early voting. I think it will be crushed on election day too.

(3,526 posts)DAN RATHER: Part of the undertow in the coming election is going to be President Obama's leadership. And the Republicans will make a case and a lot of independents will buy this argument. "Listen he just hasn't been, look at the health care bill. It was his number one priority. It took him forever to get it through and he had to compromise it to death." And a version of, "Listen he's a nice person, he's very articulate" this is what's been used against him, "but he couldn't sell watermelons if it, you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic."

(449 posts)as well as the nut cases. They have built a frenetic base of people that are highly motivated based on hate and fear. A 55 year old woman was caught in Oregon messing around with ballots. She probably seems normal to her friends and neighbors, but she has been brainwashed and committed a felony. Up to 5-yrs in jail, 125k fine. She probably baked cookies for the church bake sale, and here she is doing this.
We're up against fervent sheeple voting against the black, muslim, kenyan, communist who they think will doom them to hell if they support him. You actually have religious leaders threatening their followers souls if the support Obama.
Then there's the people who have had their jobs threatened by bosses...
