Dems hammer out party's platform
The Democratic platform committee on Saturday approved several amendments likely to be cheered by Bernie Sanders supporters, but rejected some progressive efforts, most notably opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
The Washington Post reported that the committee voted 116-64 in favor of an amendment criticizing international trade deals that do not support good American jobs, but avoided taking a stand on the TPP.
But the Sanders wing prevailed in getting a $15 minimum wage included in the platform after the draft version's language said Americans "should" earn at least $15 an hour but made no commitment to action.
The updated version now says that Democrats "will work in every way we can in Congress and the federal government, in states, and with the private sector to reach this goal. We should raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour over time and index it, give all Americans the ability to join a union regardless of where they work, and create new ways for workers to have power in the economy so every worker can earn at least $15 an hour."
The committee also adopted a number of amendments that call for stronger Wall Street regulations.
