(29,149 posts)His campaign brought him here. His campaign brought thousands who will enthusiastically support and work for the ticket here.
His campaign for the nomination is over, but the task now is to direct the energy of that campaign to the next task at hand: electing Hillary Clinton. He can't do that task without drawing out that energy.

Jakes Progress
(11,123 posts)spend the first half of her speech talking about how wonderful she was, what a great person she was. The ego here is beyond belief. He can't be so clueless.
IamTheNoodle
(98 posts)He was thanking his supporters, you expected him to just go out and praise Hillary without giving thanks to his supporters?
Jakes Progress
(11,123 posts)That was helpful wasn't it.
He wasn't thanking supporters he was basking in ego-gratification.
I supported every one of his positions from the beginning of his campaign (except for his support of gun manufacturers). But I read some of the things that were never reported about him and his background. He was never going to be elected. Never. I would love if his non-gun proposals all passed, but the republicans would have eaten him alive. He needs to know that. He needs to understand how the county works. He will get more done if he joins the Democratic party and gets to work instead of just yelling and riding the wave of uninformed love.
I do like that he has finally made the transition. He will now be remembered as someone who helped to defeat trump or as the ralph nader who killed a generation of Americans. We'll see.
Added Comment: Nice ending. He finally got there.
IamTheNoodle
(98 posts)It's clear he's backing and working for Hillary, and will bring MUCH NEEDED energy to the campaign.
And unless your a time traveler you don't know if he couldn't win the election, but who cares we'll never know.
Jakes Progress
(11,123 posts)Our exchange began during the first 15 minutes of the speech. I did like the end of his speech. It still isn't clear that he will actively get his crowd out to support Hillary as much as they supported him. I'm an old guy. I still remember McCarthy and his Clean Gene army pouting through the election and giving us richard nixon. We'll see how he does.
We are all time travelers. I've been at it for almost seven decades. Most of that time I've been very politically active. So I do have really good idea about un-electable candidates. Seen a lot of them. Supported and worked for some too. The Clinton camp never used the op research on Bernie. (Not because they were so noble, but because it would piss off people whose vote they would need.) The republicans had the same op research, but they held onto it, just praying that Bernie would be the nominee. The media had the op research. They didn't run it during the Democratic primary because they needed a viable opposition to Clinton's nomination in order to run up the ratings. The stuff is out there, but you have to look for it. It's noting that would much bother you or me, but had he been nominated, it would be everywhere, and he would have posted McGovern level votes.
Doesn't matter now. trump has to run against Clinton. She has a ton of op research too. They'll run with all of it, but it's not fresh meat anymore. They've been throwing it at her for years. Let's hope Bernie is a man of his word and will help Clinton smear trump badly enough that we can scare republicans and blue dogs to the left with the numbers.

(3,897 posts)Curious.
Jakes Progress
(11,123 posts)Our exchange began before that part of the speech. Curious that you didn't consider that or address the first half of his speech.
I didn't trash Bernie. I gave my opinion. I think he has had great proposals. I also think his ego got in the way of moving that agenda sometimes.
I'm glad he says he will campaign for Hillary. Let's hope he doesn't pull a Gene McCarthy. nixon was horrible. trump would be worse.
fishwax
(29,149 posts)Do you really think his speech would have been in any way effective if he hadn't acknowledged their work and their passion and their ideals?
Jakes Progress
(11,123 posts)But my initial turning away from Bernie (aside from his being un-electable) was his ego. I followed the first part of the primary wondering, but as he began to lose, he began to lose his ethos, his center. I guess a lot of it has to do with how much he reminds me of the old cranks who always crave the adoration that they used to get in their younger days, holding out for the glory.
He really knew that he couldn't be elected. He could have moved the party left sooner if he had stopped the whiny tit-for-tat and made a deal. The line between ego and moral certitude isn't all that fine.
CajunBlazer
(5,648 posts)Bernie needed to structure his speech exactly as he die. He needed to embrace his people, transition them gently and then show them that Hillary is there very best choice to achieve all of the objectives of his campaign.
Let's quit trying to refight the primaries, we have a general election to win.
Jakes Progress
(11,123 posts)I hope you are right. I remember when he country needed some humility from a reformer before and when it wasn't made available, we got nixon. I hope my fears are unfounded.
CajunBlazer
(5,648 posts).... who is worried about the 200,000 far left wing zealots on line:
There are 156,000,000 registered voters in this country. 200,000 zealots amounts to only 0.13% (a little more than one tenth of one percent of those voters). They are the people who would never have considered voting for a Democrat had someone like Sanders had not challenged for the nomination and they don't take orders from Sanders and never did.
Since Sanders stirred them up the zealots and gave them unfounded hope I expect the Green Party's share of the votes in November to climb from 0.36% of the total in 2012 to somewhat above 2% in November, maybe even 3%. But remember, had Sanders not appeared on the scene they would have probably sat on their hands and not voted. Well, voting for the Greens is exactly equivalent to not noting - so they will not be a factor one way or the other.
This election will not be affected by the zealots - what will affect this election is our ability to get out the vote. So forget about the zealots, contribute and work your ass off to GOTV.
If you are worried get out your pocket book or wallet and work your butt off and we will be fine.
Jakes Progress
(11,123 posts)My pocket book and shoes are already in the game. I hope yours are too.

(236 posts)Yeah, well I was a green party voter 2000, 2004 and 2008, the first two times for Nader who was preaching getting money out of politics. He was a purist. Obama in 2008 was the first democratic candidate to eschew federal matching grants which accelerated the race for campaign funds which both Bernie and Hillary have embraced.
I also had the luxury of living in Illinois so my vote for a third party candidate would not affect the electoral vote.
But I understood the numbers and (as a math major undergrad and an attorney) I could. Voting is strategic, not gut. Unfortunately, there are far too many on this side who are political instead of strategic. I voted for Obama in 2012 when I felt there was a real chance Romney could win.
Purity is just bullshit.
GreenPartyVoter
(72,384 posts)The issue here is plurality voting in multi-candidate elections, not purity.
Whimsey
(236 posts)The issue NOW is getting a democrat elected. The primary is over. Vote democrat, republican, green or libertarian. But if your vote allows another party than your choice to win your state, than it is a strategic vote.
We do not have a parliamentary system. That is a fact.
GreenPartyVoter
(72,384 posts)office twice because the left split the vote. Had we been offered ranked voting ballots, he very likely never would have won, because one of the center left candidates would have won, if not in round one then in round two.
My point is yes, right now we need to vote against Trump, but rather than live with the constant fear of split elections, let us address the issue in the future with ballot reforms.
