McCain granddaughter comes out in support of Clinton

A granddaughter of Sen. John McCain (Ariz), the 2008 GOP White House nominee, has come out in support of this year's Democratic presidential pick, Hillary Clinton, over her own party's nominee, Donald Trump.

In a Medium post titled, "For this Republican, Never Trump means 'I'm With Her,'" Caroline McCain writes that she became opposed to Trump last summer when he questioned her grandfather's status as a war hero.

"I like people who weren't captured," Trump said at the time.

John McCain was held prisoner during the Vietnam War.

While the Arizona senator "responded with grace and forgiveness — as only a man who was held in captivity for years can," Caroline McCain wrote, "I’ve been nursing a grudge ever since."

"He insulted my grandfather and attacked the very qualities  —  loyalty, bravery and selflessness  —  that he and countless other POWs embody," she added.

Yet, he did serve and was a prisoner of war. She's entitled to her own opinion.

Looking at the bigger picture, Trump slammed more than just McCain. There were perhaps other, more honorable, men who served time in the Hanoi Hilton. Yet, Trump's comment was a slam to all of them and a slam to those who served honorably and with dignity in the US military. I would be fearful if I were a member of the military under a Trump presidency.

But while he was held in the Hanoi Hilton and the way he behaved himself during that ordeal was totally honorable. As honorable as any other man who languished there.

Politically, not so much.

Glad to see his granddaughter has some sense.

he did give up an opportunity to be released by the Viet Cong in deference to his father's and grandfather's status as admirals, but he refused to take this special treatment and stayed several more years, until all the prisoners he was interned with were released.

This, not the simple fact of being a prisoner, is what he is rightly honored for.

More respect for others, more graciousness, compassion, humility, and a sense of setting a good example instead of being belligerant, pugilistic, and a bully. Trump's comments drag him down into the sewer. She's right to take umbridge over what trump said, and I'm glad she's speaking up.
