While Houston may be a Democratic town the Chronicle is not. By endorsing HRC for president the Chronicle may be moving to start reflecting the people they serve. To be fair the Chronicle endorsed LBJ in 1964 and President Obama in 2008 but those were anomalies for the right leaning editorial staff. Maybe we Chronicle readers can thank tRump for turning the Chronicle away from the dark side. Time will tell.
I will not jump on the band wagon that the republican party is in death spirals. Maybe by name but they will do as they have done throughout history and resurface with a new name.

The most surprising endorsement ever was the Chicago Tribune's endorsement of Barack Obama in 2008 (and again in 2012). In its 161-year-old history, it had NEVER endorsed a Democrat, even in this universally Democratic city. Granted, Barack Obama was from Chicago at the time. But John McCain and Mitt Romney were exactly the kinds of Republicans they would always choose anyway.
I do not believe a single newspaper in a major metropolitan area would have the temerity to endorse Donald Trump this time around. Even in red states.
