2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumKhizr Khan Had No Written Speech
Politico: That was the beginning of a 7-minute speech that became an instant sensationeloquent, emotional and notably original, coming as it did at the end of four days of highly processed political cliche. Khan, a 66-year-old immigration lawyer from Charlottesville, told the story of his sons death in combat in Iraq, but he turned that elegy into a viral rebuke of Donald Trump: You have sacrificed nothing!'And Khan delivered his broadside without using the teleprompter. There was nothing to put on it, because he had written nothing down.

(3,491 posts)and no one" is what he said. The "and no one" is more important than the "nothing" part. Why are people leaving that part out of it?

(45,433 posts)when journalists crop out "and no one" it really weakens the powerful message. A family who has lost someone in war is being viewed as foreign or suspicious or doesn't belong in this country by the Trump family who has lost no one. Just because the Drumpfs immigrated from Europe instead of the Middle East.
It's a powerful message and should not be shortened like that.

(40,416 posts)That he had delivered it from his heart, and not a teleprompter makes it all the better.
Passion can make a huge difference in people. Mr. Khan has passion and delivers it gently, however with a decided edge to it.
That's why his was the most important speeches on the DNC floor.
Khizr Khan is someone we should all aspire to be.

That was an amazing interview of sadness, hope, loss, service and commitment as an American. OMG, I cried big tears for them. Thank you so much for posting that. I'm going to go have a good cry and watch a storm brew on my patio. Whoa.

This election is a choice between imperfect and opening up the seventh seal of the Apocalypse.

(70,092 posts)hard to imagine that, in this day and age, an average citizen could get up and give a speech at the dnc w/o a written speech and pre-approval.

(22,912 posts)and I don't mean this as a put down of anyone else, but I would feel so proud and honored if those two people were the president and first lady of our nation. They understand what America is at its best better than 99% of those of us born here. What courage, eloquence, humility and grace. Ten years from now, when I think back on this election, I will think of this family; these parents and their so decent honorable and brave son.
