Cooper just said moderators should not interfere in debate with interruptions etc.

He was very intrigued by Phil Donahue's idea of just letting two candidates talk with no questions or interruptions. Cooper also seemed to indicated he will not interrupt to maintain time or stop interruptions.

The role of a debate moderator is to moderate a debate. It is to keep the debate running in a reasonable way and keep it within the rules of that debate. If a person does not do that, he or she is not a moderator at all, but is merely another spectator.

That otherwise there would be no point in having a moderator. "OK, you guys show up at 8 pm and debate until 9:30 pm. Put out the lights when you leave."
