There is a lack of understanding that when operating on the national stage, one often needs to appeal to multiple audiences by showing folks some of the other personas that they possess, as it shows their ability to be adaptable to different situations.

I have only partially followed Kaine over the years and really didn't have much of a sense of his personality other than him being a pretty low-keyed, under-the-radar type of guy, who tended to be centrist in policy leanings. However last night showed me a whole other side to him.
