2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPat Robertson Admits he Blew Election Prediction he Received from God
In January, televangelist Pat Robertson told 700 Club viewers that in his annual New Years conversation with God, the Almighty had revealed to him who the next president would be. Up through Election Day, Robertson harshly criticized President Obama and the Democratic Party while praising Mitt Romney. Then, Robertsons Christian Broadcasting Network predicted a GOP sweep, leaving Robertson utterly confounded by Obamas victory.
Today, responding to a question from a viewer who wondered why her business is struggling since she thought God told her it would be successful, Robertson admitted that he sometimes misses Gods message. So many of us miss God, I wont get into great detail about elections but I sure did miss it, I thought I heard from God, I thought I had heard clearly from God, what happened? Robertson replied, You ask God, how did I miss it? Well, we all do and I have a lot of practice.

(5,165 posts)Because Ayn as in Mine Rand is Pat Robertson's REAL God. Pat loves to kneel down to his beloved Golden Elephant and kiss it's ass every chance he can!
Maybe it was a case of bad lip reading.

(3,234 posts)yourself what you believe your god would tell you. It's just you telling you, what you want to hear. You want to believe that you are hearing god, but you are only hearing your own self thoughts without speaking them and crediting them to god. Unless of course you are actually talking to god on the telephone or internet, then I would say that someone has been pulling your leg. Even your god would not have voted for Romney and Ryan. As a matter of fact, god told me when I spoke to her before the election, that she was voting for Obama/Biden and so were all her friends and family.

People like him give Christianity a bad name. People like him polarize this democracy. People like him are no different from the fanatics who preach hate in other religions. People like him contribute to economic, gender and racial inequality. People like him ultimately worship money and place its importance ahead of human well being. Pat Roberts you are a con man

He's perfect, we just hear imperfectly...but only when we are proven to be wrong. The rest of the time we hear him correctly. Ho hum. Please, send your tithes to the address on your screen.

His fans are soul-less hate-mongers and racists, so I'm sure they are pleased with Robertson's newest attrocious behavior and ill-disguised hatred for America.

(22) When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

(66 posts)I don't think necessarily that extreme Christians are stupid but just ignorant and gullible. My dad is republican but we agree on one thing, why do people take a fictional book so seriously? They were meant to just be stories to be read for enjoyment. If you think about it, all religions don't make sense and have crazy stories. They all just have metaphors not to be taken literally. I'm not trashing religion. I don't have a problem with religious people just as long as they don't force their beliefs on me. A good friend of mine is a baptist but we respect each other and don't question either.

(90,690 posts)As a child I used to tag along with whichever neighbors wanted to let me go to church with them, so I was religious for a long, long time. However, one thing my nonreligious mom got through to me is that stories like Genesis were (a) the best understanding of a tribal people at the time, and (b) metaphorical, as in, "A billion years could be a single day to God." The Bible was NOT to be taken literally. As an adult I met a wonderful and wonderfully literate Lutheran pastor who explained Revelations as a literary genre popular at the time around the Mediterranean world. Just let that last sentence sink in for a minute.
My spiritual life has been a journey, and though I no longer identify myself as a Christian, it took me many years to say so. I became more or less a polytheist on the Goddess path. It took me even longer to articulate that people like the appalling Pat Robertson and the late Jerry Falwell worship a god, all right, but no matter how many times they say "Jesus" and "God", the being they really worship is hateful and nasty, and is certainly not my god. In order to continue respecting Christianity (which I do -- Jesus was quite a teacher, a Bodhisattva, even) I had to use my polytheism to separate people like those two from what used to be mainstream Christianity....
Thanks for dropping by to comment on my post. Welcome to DU.
