Catholic Church Bulletin Says Youll Go To Hell If You Vote DemocratImmediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell.
Ed Mazza Overnight Editor, The Huffington Post 11/04/2016 04:12 am ET
Hillary Clinton is carrying out the work of Satan and Catholics who vote Democrat are going to hell. Thats the message of a recent bulletin at a San Diego Catholic church.
It is a mortal sin to vote Democrat, a flyer distributed at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Old Town read, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell.
The Oct. 16 flyer, called Voters Guide for Serious Catholics, was written in English and Spanish and tucked into the weekly bulletin given out at the church, which also serves as a polling place.
The flyer listed five Democratic policy positions at odds with church teachings. Two weeks later, a second flyer mentioned Clinton by name and claimed she was under the influence of Satan.

(135,425 posts)The fact that somebody took this and then made it public took it out of context, Perozich was quoted as saying. I would never tell anyone to vote this or vote that.
By law, Perozich is forbidden from supporting candidates in church or church-provided materials or the organization could lose its tax-exempt status under IRS rules.
Perozich has made headlines for his politics before, including in 2009 when he claimed that abominations would be forced on America by President Barack Obama.

(5,611 posts)I am an agnostic/atheist, and I am no apologist for the church, but this kind of hysterical, evangelical nonsense is out of the norm. This priest should absolutely be called out for telling congregants that they would "go to hell" if they voted for democrats, which is a ridiculous statement for a catholic priest to make in the first place. And the church should do its best to find out who stuffed this idiotic pamphlet in the church bulletin
Catholic voters tend to vote for democrats as a group.

(5,611 posts)and neither did the church and its priest. Just imho the language of the bulletin, which is likely the work of some enterprising "volunteer" type, was more evangelical than Catholic in tone. The church does not take official positions on political elections, and Catholics tend to vote for democrats over republicans.

"My God, what's that?", she asked pointing. She's never been in a church before in her life.
I tried to explain but she said "You worship human torture"?
Yeah

(13,133 posts)To be rhetorical because this is not small issue for us non-religious persons, with delusional thinking being carried out with a herd mentality then there can be no religious freedom. That small minority the would like inflict their beliefs on everybody will always be the problem
I don't have a problem with religion in the overall sense, but more of when you have to take position and allegiance with others just because you are not willing to take a position to be a part of any herd. Then at that point, religion affects you regardless of a your attempt not to be a part of it
Not a bad idea to laugh at it, but when you pop the hood to check the drive-train, look carefully, all is not copacetic in the way it runs

(108,980 posts)It was a FLYER that literally ANYONE could have inserted into those Bulletins. It has been disavowed by both the pastor and the diocese. It doesn't represent Catholic thinking.
Church doors are usually left open so people can pray. Anyone could have come in there and inserted the fliers into the stacks of printed Church bulletins.
And Catholics are more likely to be Democrats than the average American.

The within generation comparisons for 2011 show more Catholics affiliated with the Democrats than with the Republicans in all four generations.

Also it looks like you missed this part of the story:
Immaculate Conceptions pastor, Father Richard Perozich, admitted to the New York Daily News that he told churchgoers they will go to hell if they vote Democrat.

(108,980 posts)be Democrats than the average white Protestant, or the average American overall.
The Catholic Church in the US is diverse, and always has been. It has always included a wave of recent immigrants. Now it is Hispanic but before then there were many Irish, Italians, and others.
whatthehey
(3,660 posts)As we can see, non-Hispanic Catholics are strong R and getting more so. The overall Hispanic split is identical to that of Hispanic Catholics, which makes sense since a large majority are Catholic
Pretending that the high level of Hispanic adherents means Catholics qua Catholics are Dem is like pointing to Black churches and saying that means Evangelicals are strongly Dem. If as high a ratio of Evangelicals were black as Catholics are Hispanic, it would make Evangelical Protestantism look politically Dem too, which no-one sane pretends is true.

And the wording in that flier sounds much more like it was written by an envangelical Christian. In decades of going to different Catholic churches across the country, I've never seen anything written like that piece anywhere.

He insists that he didn't prepare the flyer, that an overzealous supporter went too far.
Nowadays, it is the rare church, mosque or synogogue that is 'left open' without someone in active, watchful attendance minding the store. It would be rather difficult for someone to infect all of the bulletins in that fashion without being noticed. This was a case of an overzealous parishioner PARROTING a bigoted priest (who admitted to the conduct--see the link).
The priest should be fired, or sent off to some hellhole in dire need of spiritual assistance, like maybe the village where that hell-bound VP candidate Tim Kaine did his missionary work, so he can get closer to God by suffering along with his flock--then maybe he'll get his "vote Democrat and go to hell" priorities straight.

(5,648 posts)I grew up Catholic, my dad was a Deacon in the church, I graduated from a Catholic high school - I have never seen Catholic clergy get overtly involved in an election as I have seen some ministers of protestant denominations do. It just isn't done in the Catholic church. In addition, by law, tax exempt organizations can get politically involved or they can lose their tax exempt status. That alone should land this priest in hot water with his superiors.
It should be noted that polls show that the majority of Catholics are voting for Hillary.
Now are some very conservative Catholics that may be pushing this kind of crap - this priest is probably one of them. However, it should be also noted their new ultimate leader, the Pope, is not in a agreement are he would not have openly criticized Trump.
This incident should in no way reflect on the entire Catholic Church - I am a fallen away Catholic, but that would not be fair.
