2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOK...who would you back in 2020?
These are just a few names I've heard mentioned. I'm open to adding names I haven't listed her(other than anyone who ran this year, since at this point it would be better if all of them sat it out) so feel free to offer them.

(81,897 posts)I don't think Michelle wants to run for anything. Gabbard is a hawk. Kaine is interesting, but he wasn't great in the GE. Moore is unelectable.

(81,897 posts)Dems need to go on a serious rebuilding binge. Maybe someone will surface from that.
I'm not convinced Trump will be president in 3 years.
The problem with Warren and Sanders is she will be 72 and he will be 78. I don't think it's feasible
Freddie
(9,279 posts)We need to think younger! Bernie will be 78 in 2020, Elizabeth Warren 71 (I think)
No one connected to the Clintons or Obamas. That includes Tim Kaine, much as I like him.
Sen./former Gov. Maggie Hassan
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand
Sen. Kamala Harris
Sen. Bob Casey of PA. He's popular here and should easily win re-election in 2018. Says he's anti-choice but (unlike his dad) has never tried to inflict his views on others that I know of. He's un-controversial and squeaky-clean. Plus since we're stuck with the EC for the duration, we'd get PA back.

(2,013 posts)of the shit that that beautiful family had to endure for them. I like where you're going with this, though. In any other context I'd say FUCK talking about 2020 at this point, but given what's going on, I'm kind of looking forward to the next election already (eyes on 2018 for now, though).

(18,672 posts)Michelle and Elizabeth likely won't run. I'd totally back Bernie, too.

Too damned soon!!!

(68,867 posts)He's taller, more charismatic, has better hair, is cooler, and is younger! He's got a sex scandal to but that was a while ago, and he married a gal, now has three adorable little children. He could be our JFK Junior Plus he's fresh and not A Washington insider.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)I'd look for him in '24 or '28. But I agree he's one to watch.

(68,867 posts)Why does Gavin have to be, governor before becoming a president? Is lieutenant governor
That should be good enough!
I think he's the best candidate to actually get Trump out of office in four years
I'm not waiting eight years!
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)I'm all for it. He's been ahead of the curve on everything from marriage equality to marijuana legalization.
He wants to run in 4 years, I'd totally support him.

(17,186 posts)As a San Francisco resident, I've been lukewarm about Gavin. I may warm up a little more toward him after he gets some more political seasoning.
I will never forgive Newsom for his opposition to Proposition F, a 2015 City of San Francisco vote proposition that would have put sensible limits on Airbnb. The conventional wisdom of Airbnb is that Maw and Paw will make a few extra bucks in their golden years by renting out Junior's old room on a short-term basis. The reality of Airbnb is wholesale evictions and corporate participation, at the risk of anyone in the city who needs a place to live.
You can watch Gavin's pro Airbnb campaign video here- now I'm all upset about him all over again:

(80,708 posts)allow much of any development whatsoever.
So real estate is exorbitantly expensive with all the fallout that entails.
The fact of the matter is, there are a lot of people who want to live there, and not enough places for them to live. The Bay Area needs to have a long-overdue adult conversation about stuff like its reflexive NIMBYism, to my mind. Imagine all the commute, etc. problems that would have been solved if they had ran BART all the way up to Sonoma, decades ago, as they originally planned to.

(68,867 posts)Not a Dealbreaker, for me anyway.
He's got charisma up the Yazoo, and standing next to Tramp, it will have to be someone who has everything The Tramp doesn't have
the smarts, but also shines in the optics Down to the height, the hair, the youth, but yet it's still seen as an outsider not tied down to Washington. He's been very liberal in the areas that are more nationwide oriented, and not having to do anything with A proposition in San Francisco
He was the mayor there for years and kept getting reelected. He's already been Lieutenant governor since 2011, so there's that.
There is no perfect person out there to the extent of going back to local propositions
I don't think it's wise to be so particular! That seems to be one of our problems getting hung up in the weeds!

I don't have a personal favorite at this point, nor would I necessarily back any on this list, but these folks have been mentioned before.

(53,127 posts)We need to focus on gaining control of state legislatures and governors races. When the GOP controls elections, they limit the franchise and we can't win.
Please don't talk about the next presidential election already.

(9,177 posts)Not sure this list gets to it. We don't know own if the scammer in chief will forever poison the well of non-politicians. There are some brilliant, successful liberals in the tech/scientific arena who may want to do their patriotic duty. Or at least restore the reputation of American Businessmen. Someone bold. And gender doesn't matter.

(885 posts)That being said, I'm really rooting for Tulsi Gabbard to progress through the party. She put her foot down and stood with Bernie even after DNC harassment. She's a strong woman who served (I'm a veteran, not a hawk), she appeals to the younger demographic, has Bernie's support, etc.
That being said, I think we have a lot of viable options if they start planning ahead.

(9,905 posts)People love him and he is right on all the issues. He knows how to stick to the issues and not get diverted to personal attacks unlike Hillary. I live in swing state media market and all her ads were attacks on Trump. Not one was about what she wanted to do to help the working and middle class.
