2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat happens when the jobs don't come back?
What happens four years from now when the factories and mills don't return to Michigan and Pennsylvania? Who will Trump blame when natural gas continues to undercut coal as an energy source? If you think people are angry now, Where will they turn when Trump fails to reverse trends that are out of his control?

(14,568 posts)1 They will blame BHO. Yes, it will be complete bullshit, but we live in a fact free world now, they will say it, the media will parrot it and the morons in thus country will chew their cuds and believe it.
2 They will come up w some completely innane bullshit along the lines of how things were so bad they need time to fix it. Bullshit, but see 1
3 They will create a crisis and use ut a rational for why the country has to leave them in power, see bush 2 and 911, Iraq.

(34,661 posts)Coal is dead,no one wants the Pollution and the Health risks. First off,it takes years to build a Steel Plant. Second,it is not going to happen. Most of the Regions who are in dire straights, number one problem, poor Education levels and until that changes, nothing changes. Wow,more Call Centers? Again, who is going to invest in a region that has unskilled labor force.

(34,661 posts)Fellow Teamsters drank the Kook Aide, and it was contentious couple of years after that debacle. As a result, when Organizing Shops, this was thrown in our face on many occasions. Needless to say, many of my fellow Democratic Teamsters carried on. And some of us ended up on the infamous Enemies List.

(68,634 posts)And if Democrats would work to bring new manufacturing and keep say autos...not allow China and others to dump goods, we could actually win elections. A country that has no manufacturing base and no jobs will be an economic failure and a top-down kind of country...with many more have-nots. I vote for Democrats despite their mixed views on trade. I am a loyal Democrat, but free trade as practiced is crap. The idea that we can prosper with service jobs is ridiculous...and white-collar jobs are moving overseas as well... due to cheap labor. We still need phones, computers, cars etc. We were told, we would keep the 'good' jobs but we won't.

(34,661 posts)This free trade thing is a joke. All it is,is a Tax Transfer for the Wealthy. Lets be honest,if anyone thinks Trump and his Slugs are going to fix the real problems, and that is not going to happen, the haves are never going to give to the Have Nots.
First you have to do a Socialist Program of make work projects in the near term. And at the same time,Educational Programs for modern Manufacturing or Tech have to happen. And if it is to be some type of widget plant, that takes two to three years to build. Existing Plants that are idle, are so out of date and non productive, which is one of the reasons Companies used to escape their Social Commitments, and again it is time and materials. Bottom line is,Republican Administrations at the State and Local levels do not want the average Joe Blow to threaten their Social positions. Well paid Working Class People are a threat to any and all Conservatives. They believe in a permanent underclass subservient to the ruling class.

(34,661 posts)Trump building came mostly from China, and the only US Steel used was some distressed market stuff.
With Ross as the new Commerce Secretary, watch the remaining Industrial Base go off Shore. Really expect our unemployment level to spike within one year. Just more of Reagan's slash and burn of America. And all those Dupes who voted for this POS have their day of reckoning coming sooner than later.

(34,661 posts)deals so far this year. Perfectly legal as long as the new Country of Origin okays it. Remember,Trump registered some 40 Corporate Business Names in Saudi Arabia last week. Halliburton did this a few years back in Dubai. More of Corporate America's USA Rape.

(4,552 posts)The USW voted for Trump. I know people who work high up in this union and they know their people voted for Trump.
I say make the whole nation right to work and destroy all labor law.
Repeal Davis Bacon cause I could not care less now.
Destroy all public sector unions and their pension systems.
I bet the teachers voted for Trump also! Smash the teacher unions
I am done defending unions The people in them are stupid.
The only thing that will wake up these clowns is when their pay gets hit hard. Real hard.
These dopes did the same thing with Reagan and what did he do. He destroyed unions in this country and they elected him twice.
He cut them open button to brisket and they loved him.
I am mad and I am done with unions.

(56,828 posts)anything bad that happens is somebody else's fault. Typical Republican, but he's got a much bigger platform than other Republicans and he plays the media like a fiddle.
Anything good that happens is because of Trump (look at the Ford plant in Kentucky last week - he took credit for that even though it was clearly not because of him and is 2 1/2 months before he takes office)
What needs to happen is to convince as many of his voters that Trump made empty promises and that his way is NOT the way to go in the future - it's education, job training and building out our infrastructure (and, not with corporate tax giveaways)

(16,090 posts)Some anger, some buyers remorse, but nothing big...because the majority of those people that bought the line of BS, are too arrogant to admit, that they were stupid!!!
Yes, I said stupid...because if Trump had been serious about bringing jobs back, wouldn't he have set the example for other corporations to follow, by bringing back those jobs that he controlled? It's funny how it was one question that no one in the "media" asked him...if he was serious why not start with the jobs he had sent overseas?
Yes, I called them stupid, because they actually believe that he can do all of this without Congress! Stupid, because many of them are going to lose their access to health care, because they believe that the Republicans are going to replace the ACA!
And stupid people will blame anyone else but themselves...because they can't accept the fact that they did a stupid thing!!!

(68,634 posts)on a modern manufacturing model. Did you know the TPP allows slavery in some instances? But you are right if we offer them no alternative in terms of jobs, they won't be back and the hate they feel will grow...economic distress breeds hatred and revolution. Hubs worked in autos for 30 years. I know a great deal about how not to practice trade...learned the hard way.

(4,552 posts)Nothing will happen because we have given up all power. We never do the things that would put corporate America on notice. We the people run this economy. 70% of this economy is controlled by consumer spending.
We need to bring back the BOYCOTT!
We need to boycott the banks and we need to do it right now. No stronger message could be sent.
This site would be a perfect platform for it.

(27,742 posts)When all else fails the congress spends money on a military buildup. This is what Reagan's idiots did in the eighties.
These jobs don't last and are subject to the wims of congress.
The steel industry has been depressed for years, after the losses suffered by ThyssenKrupp after opening a state of the art mill in Alabama I don't expect to see any new investment in more mills any time soon.
