Alison Lundergan Grimes slams Mitch McConnell, D.C. dysfunction
7/30/13
LEXINGTON, Ky. The Democratic Partys 15-month effort to take down Mitch McConnell began in earnest here Tuesday evening, with the 34-year-old Alison Lundergan Grimes declaring that the veteran Senate Republican leader embodies a disease of dysfunction in Washington.
In a carefully scripted campaign rally that featured a video endorsement from Bill Clinton, speeches from prominent state Democratic leaders and remarks from the candidates 83-year-old grandmother, the party tried to project a sense of unity that Grimes was best-equipped to take out the powerful GOP leader who has dominated the states political world for three decades.
Before a diverse crowd of some 1,600 supporters, Grimes and the Kentucky Democratic establishment leveled a barrage of attacks against McConnell, portraying him as a purveyor of Washington gridlock. The party tried to paint the young Grimes as a standard bearer in the mold of Democratic icons like former Sen. Wendell Ford, while projecting a sense of history to her campaign: She would be the first female elected as senator from the Bluegrass State.
Where once we had giants like Sen. Wendell Ford, building up this state and this nation, we now have a senior senator that very much tears the values that we believe in someone who instead of caring about each and every one of us that is here has shown he clearly only cares about himself, Grimes said, standing on the steps of a banquet hall owned by her family.

(3,709 posts)is that Alison Lundergan Grimes is no Wendall Ford. However, she is better than the alternative.
I live in Kentucky and find myself very disappointed Grimes is the best we can do. There are other Democrats in the primary, and while I know none of them likely have a chance against McConnell, I am unhappy with the fact the Party has chosen to anoint Grimes. I guess I from the old school where the Party remains neutral in primaries.
Times have certainly changed, but I suppose when an evil like McConnell could be ousted, all bets are off.
A Little Weird
(1,754 posts)It's not right that the party insiders have basically picked her without input from those pesky voters. Why even bother with having a primary?
But you're right, she's better than McConnell so she's got my vote.

Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes (D) announced her 2014 senatorial campaign kick off Thursday, releasing her first campaign video.
Grimes announced on July 1 that she would be challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in the upcoming election.
The following day, McConnell's campaign team released an auto-tuned campaign video, pitching Grimes as self-centered (repeating "I wanna thank me, me, me" and unwilling to compromise. The spoof, alluding to Grimes' 2011 campaign video, asks, "What rhymes with Alison Lundergan Grimes?"
Grimes' newly released video features footage from that 2011 campaign spot, which starred Grimes' grandmothers, Elsie and Thelma. Grimes calls the 2013 video and her latest campaign a tribute to Thelma, who passed away shortly after filming the ad.
