2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMitt Romney is tan, rested, and ready to lose again
In a move that can be seen as either desperation or were all gonna die anyway, so what the hell? conservatives are casting their eyes westward to a man a stoic man, an honest and true man of values, standing knee deep in the Pacific Ocean watching the sun go down on America as their savior in 2016.
That man is a man called Mitt. Family man, businessman, gentle and attentive lover, and owner of both a car elevator and a losing career in elections.
Surveying the 2016 GOP field and falling into a pit of existential dread and despair where there is no light, no hope, no exit, nothing but a bleak meaningless abyss of wretchedness and desolation, Republicans see hope in the sparkle of Mitt Romneys eyes and the Earth-mother joy in life his wife Ann brings to the party.
So the Why not Mitt? crowd is going to throw some shit against the wall and see what sticks. After all, that is what fan-mag Politico does.

(14,733 posts)And the polls showing that 45% of folks think we'd be better off if he'd won.
Didn't he get 47% of the vote before? By my books, that means he's actually lost 2% of the people who actually voted for him in 2012 - they now think things would have been worse if he'd been elected. But the media wants to make it sound like he's somehow gained ground.

(6,847 posts)Fun place to be a dem this SW corner of ohio. Never a dull moment when it comes to asshat republican activities. Cranley is my currently favorite local punching bag. Every time he does something stupid I say "my god - how could he be dumber". Then the next day he shows me. Sheesh.

(14,733 posts)Rolled our eyes at how all the 'kill it' candidates got elected, then immediately realized the cost between killing it vs finishing it was essentially a pittance, so they immediately decided to keep going with it.
And we're forever glad that we're far enough north that we don't have to get robbed like you guys to pay for the stadiums.

(6,847 posts)My favorite was when they brought the project manager in to be "interrogated" by the newly elected city council. I forget all the details but this guy is in his early 60's. He's been building publicly funded projects around the country for 40 years. His track record is amazing when it comes to delivering as promised, on time, on budget projects.
He tells Cranley something like - in all probability the cost to cancel is equal to the cost of completion at this point and there is some probability that the cost of canceling could be higher. Cranley says "sir - I respectfully disagree". The old guys says - "Sir, that is your opinion but I would respectfully submit that the voters of Cincinnati and the other members of the council to ask you about your vast construction expertise that makes that a valid opinion". They just sat there and stared at each other and Cranley changed the subject.
These guys didn't run on killing the the street car. They ran on shutting down the development and growth in the Over The Rhine area. It has for decades been a slum area that housed the city's poor minorities. With the successful development underway - many of these folks are being pushed west - beyond the traditionally Appalachian lower Price Hill but up into Price Hill and even West Price Hill. Lots and lots of white resentment in those neighborhoods. Not only among those now living there but those who grew up there and moved away. General feeling is that Mallory pushed the "problem" out of OTR and into Western Hills. IIRC, Cranley became mayor with only 14% of the vote - a combination of poor turnout and a narrow margin of victory against Qualls.
Shutting down the street car was a dog whistle to the white community of Western Hills that these were guys who would "protect" your neighborhood from the OTR onslaught. Couldn't do it with canceling the street car but we can sure put the brakes on future developments. They always knew the street car was going to happen but they sent the signal about future projects very clearly.

(5,791 posts)This is probably why. Mitt has something serious to hide, and he won't get away with it this time. There are probably quite a few folks who know exactly how many years he paid zero in taxes, and this time, they won't keep quiet about it.

(10,527 posts)of Paul Ryan just before the New Hampshire primary. That way if Huckabee wins Iowa again, it will become a two person race.
I think Romney would love to do for Ryan what Joe Lieberman and Charlie Christ did for McCain in 2008. Their endorsements were pivotal. The Lieberman endorsement helped turn McCain's numbers around, and the Christ endorsement turned an impending Romney win in Florida into a McCain win.
BTW....do you know who did this for Bill Clinton in 1992? Zell Miller in Georgia. History has forgotten the significance of Clinton's win in the Georgia Primary. Coming in second in New Hampshire was about beating Bob Kerry and becoming a finalist, along with Paul Tsongas. Beating Tsongas in Georgia put Clinton on a path to march through Super Tuesday and become the front runner.

Hopefully that won't be in play in 2016.
