Tea Party opponent calls for Raul Grijalva's excommunication from the Catholic Church.

Raul's Response:

My opponent has called for my excommunication from the Catholic Church

My opponent, the Tea Party Republican Gabby Mercer, has just called for my excommunication from the Catholic Church because of crimes against the values of the church, infanticide and a variety of other things. I’m sure Mercer would love to bring back the Spanish Inquisition. Mercer saw me receiving my sacrament at a memorial service for a dear friend, Manny Herrera III, whom I graduated from high school with. Mr. Herrera was a friend, as is his family. The fact that she would bring politics and her campaign into the funeral service of Manny Herrera is shameful and quite frankly disgusting.

Pope Francis said, “Who am I to judge?” I would hope Mercer would take that to heart. Pope Francis stated that the Ryan Budget was against children and the values of the Catholic Church; I hope Mercer is against the Ryan Budget. Pope Francis called for an end to war and the militarization on the border and to take these migrant children as Jesus would and bring them into the fold. Pope Francis spoke against poverty and the massive accumulation of wealth; I hope she is against that also.

Mercer needs to examine her values before casting judgment. And, for once, can we agree that in this political race religion is not going to be part of the discussion? I respect everybody’s religion, their right to worship their god in the way they want, their privacy, and I would hope Mercer provides me and every other resident of the district with the same decency and respect that Pope Francis did when he said “who am I to judge.”

“Every man, every woman who has to take up the service of government, must ask themselves two questions: ‘Do I love my people in order to serve them better? Am I humble and do I listen to everybody, to diverse opinions in order to choose the best path?’ If you don’t ask those questions, your governance will not be good.”

Pope Francis, 2013-09-16 Vatican Radio

I wonder if Mercer can sit down yet following that thorough asskicking.
