Chris Christies administration is being accused of taking unprecedented steps to keep public records secret. This complaint comes five years after Christie took the reigns as governor of New Jersey and promised a new era of accountability and transparency.
Media outlets and watchdog organizations have been forced to sue to obtain records-even to acquire regularly disclosed information like payroll data.
Mother Jones reports that other records of interest include the George Washington Bridge scandal, pay-to-play allegations, possible ethics violations, and out-of-state fundraising trips Christie made while considering a 2016 presidential bid.
The Governors office is currently waging 23 court battles in an effort to keep these records from being disseminated to the media and the public. Jennifer Borg, who serves as general counsel to the North Jersey media group, says the track record is abysmal. Her organization has sued the state 6 times since Christie was elected. When these cases go to court, a judge usually finds that the records were unlawfully withheld, and the state is forced to cover the legal fees.
Information obtained through the states Open Public Records Act shows the state of New Jersey paid out $441,000 reimbursing legal fees related to the 23 cases. Its a half-a-million dollars of wasted money, said Attorney Bruce Rosen, who was one of the plaintiffs that received one of the payments. It boggles the mind, he added, because in all of the cases, the plaintiffs were ultimately found by the courts to be entitled to the records.
