Related: About this forumBernie Sanders supporters should congratulate Hillary Clinton on her endorsement from AFT
It's a great endorsement.
Hillary appears to have the overwhelming support of AFT members.
The best approach is to congratulate Hillary and move on. I'm sure Bernie Sanders will pick up some important endorsements in the future. Hopefully Hillary Clinton supporters will congratulate Bernie Sanders on any important future endorsements.

We look forward to congratulating Ms. Clinton on the endorsement of the rank and file 1.5 million members.
By the way, when is the rank and file vote?

(23,973 posts)Union membership is not monolithic, as I am sure Randi Weingarten will be reminded of that by the membership.

(53,038 posts)Is AFT didn't support the candidate they want. All unions involve a hierarchy, leaders elected by the membership. That is how it has always worked. There is no evidence those teachers in the article are anywhere close to the majority of the union membership. Given how far behind Clinton Sanders is in national polling, it simply doesn't make sense that a majority of teachers would support him instead. And certainly the vast majority of people on this site aren't in the AFT, but they are furious because the union didn't do their bidding. So now the AFT leadership is the enemy, just like the President, the Democratic Party, and the 85 percent of Democratic voters who support someone besides Sanders.

(40,656 posts)I love your positive assertions about how everyone was asked. I have yet to speak to anyone who was. But then again, I'm only a teacher and a union officer the whole damned time. Ignore me. Just like they did.
Jeez, everyone knows teaching, teachers and education because they were in fifth grade once.

(53,038 posts)I said the only reason people here care about any of it is because they didn't support their choice for a candidate. I said unions are based on a hierarchy of leadership, one people on this site have decided to smear since they dare to support a different candidate. I said you have no evidence the majority opposes the decision, and there is no logical reason to believe they do given Clinton's considerable lead over Sanders in the polls. Suddenly people here care about their process for nomination, when in past years they didn't. It's clear the concern as always is for one thing and one thing only: advancing Bernie Sanders candidacy.
Next time, please do me the courtesy of reading what I say before responding. If you want to have a conversation with someone who made the points above, go find that person.
Believe it or not, a great deal of education goes on beyond fifth grade. I have spent my life working in universities, both teaching and in administrative positions. That isn't relevant to this point, other than your gratuitous assumption that my knowledge of education is limited to the fifth grade. I in fact have taught a number of teachers in college history courses. Again, I understand that pales in comparison to the intellectual heft of the fifth grade, but I soldier on regardless.

(40,656 posts)union will endorse. Some teachers don't even believe we belong in politics. I have been in this business for almost thirty years and served as a state and local officer. I know what I'm talking about and this is a blatant conflict of interest on the part of the union hierarchy. I don't care if it was for Sanders, without asking EVERYONE, its bullshit.
the rest was edited after cooling off. This 'endorsement' was a payoff by the hierarchy to a pal. Even if it went to Sanders it would be wrong. They didn't ask. This in NO WAY reflects my feelings and desires for a candidate and I think it will lose a lot of votes for Hillary. But then, who the fuck cares? No one asked everyone after all. They asked enough to make it look legit and the outrage indicates what a major fail that was.
Never ever underestimate the outrage of a public school teacher being told what to believe.

(23,973 posts)As well as being a financial supporter, the head of a PAC supporting Clinton, along with the possibility of being chosen to be a cabinet member.
The rank and file sees the quid pro quo, even when others are blind to it.
There was no polling of the union membership, this was done solely at the executive level with very little input from them whatsoever.
http://watchdog.org/229045/teachers-union-irks-rank-file-clinton-endorsement/
There is no evidence that the majority of the rank and file supports Clinton, either.
Hillary Clinton has spoken favorably about charter schools, Common Core standards and testing policies all of which most unionized teachers do not support.

(53,038 posts)Not you or me. You in fact do not know what the entire "rank-and file" believe. You know what some unhappy members have reported online.
Politics is forged through personal relationships. That is the advantage of being a long-term member of the Democratic party. One builds relationships with key Democratic constituencies. Expecting someone who has avoiding membership in a party to reap all the advantages of that party is naive. Sanders chose not to become a Democrat. He had his reasons, which I respect. But that also comes with a cost.
