They used to stay out of politics but they're all in now. The current president has lots of buddies in the Republican party. He was one of the tools that testified for Issa's Health and Human Services Committee. And yet, the official church position is that Mormonism is a cult. They have several publications on it still available from their in-house publishing company.

idol-worshipping Catholics!

Only thing worse to a Southern Baptist was a Mormon/7th Day Adventists (they used to be synonymous back in the 60's to a SB).

What is going to trump - racism or religious fanaticism? Should be interesting.

Here are extracts from a fundie's Antichrist website speaking to them in the language they understand:

"His speeches will be heard by millions who will hang on his persuasive rhetoric. The content as well as the form of his speech will attract. Like most false prophets, he will even be sincere and passionate. But he is a liar. He adds dashes of truth to the mix, so that his lie tastes like truth. He will use all the right catchwords, using the language of the church, even throwing in a Bible text or two. But he is the ultimate Liar, and will deceive many.

He will use every tool available: school teachers, politicians, news broadcasters, artists, musicians, scientists and doctors, lawyers and businessmen. All will be pressed into the service of Antichrist to deceive men. But especially he will use those whose calling it is to persuade and to teach -- men who claim to be preachers of the gospel of Jesus Christ."

Of course some would say "That's Obama!", but I think the stronger and more persuasive case could be made that those descriptions are more applicable to Romney.

especially regarding religion and literally "demonizing" opponents. Besides, if we use Romney's Mormonism as a lever against him, the "Obama is Muslim" bullshit will pick up steam in reply. I am too old to gin up a lot of hate for someone, just because they are not on my side politically. Disagreeing with me does not automatically make you evil. It merely makes you wrong. Besides, life it too short to spend it pissed off.

implying instead that Romney is not currently evil but was at some point in the past? (Like, for example, when he assaulted John Lauber with a pair of scissors or drove for 12 hours with Seamus in a pet carrier on the roof of his car?)

Romne is one evil shitstain. He gives me the creeps. I will be voting Dem in November not because I love Obama (I don't), but because Romney is so fucking evil.

Let the Westboro Baptist Church lead the charge on that one, if they haven't already. They used to be considered a fringe group for claiming "God Hates Fags". But now, it would seem they are just a less eloquent extension of the right-wing consensus. I'd say, push their buttons on the issue, and they might just kick up enough dust to get the idea out there.

was made up by a guy who just wanted to "know" more women than his wife and needed an excuse to justify it. Et voila - vision in the desert, golden leaves, angels, he's the chosen prophet of god, and oh yeah, you can have as many "wives" as you want. . . Joseph Smith was not only a charlatan, a snake oil salesman and serial philanderer, he was a complete whack job.

And I read all of THAT in a book on the history of the Mormon church written BY a Mormon! Can you imagine what they left out?

edit - left out a couple of words. . .

Why do I have this feeling that Mormons will involve themselves with the Romney GOTV ground crew, with the latent motive of collecting data on Republican voters?

In the guise of survey questions. And mapping out precisely where the Spiritual-but-not Anti-Mormon Republican (and Independent) voters are.

If Romney wins, then missionaries will come at their duty with a powerful zeal. The Fundie cottage industry of track publishing will have a huge windfall.

Until yesterday, that is, when one of the guys I work with said exactly the same thing to me when we were talking about the presidential race!!

And he didn't read you say it here first.

When he told me that yesterday, I laughed my ass off, thinking it wouldn't be effective, at all.
The guy I work with hates Romney with a burning passion because he is a Baptist.
And considering that the guy I work with also used to be a lay minister, who used to live in Texas, I have to agree that this could be a very effective way of undermining Romney totally, rendering him permanently inoperable.

Sort of like taking the batteries out of that gawd damned Energizer rabbit.
