Can Hillary Overcome The 'Liar' Factor?

A new approach to the email scandal may help, but pollsters see a long climb ahead.

By Steven Shepard

Hillary Clinton took a new tack this week when answering questions about her use of a private email account as secretary of state: She took responsibility and admitted she was at fault.

“It clearly wasn’t the best choice,” Clinton said flatly on Wednesday, as she campaigned in Iowa.

On Thursday, the reason for the change in tone came into sharper focus with a stunning new poll illustrating the extent to which voters don’t trust Clinton to tell the truth.

While Republicans have been test-driving attacks against Clinton for a year and a half, no other line of attack has broken through to this degree. The numbers in a new Quinnipiac University poll are striking: More than 3-in-5 voters, 61 percent, think Clinton isn’t honest and trustworthy. Overall, Clinton’s favorability ratings slipped to 39 percent — her lowest rating since Quinnipiac began polling on Clinton after she and her husband left the White House.

When voters were asked the first word that came to their mind about Clinton, the top three replies were indictments of her trustworthiness. The No. 1response was “liar,” followed by “dishonest” and “untrustworthy.” Overall, more than a third of poll respondents said their first thought about Clinton was some version of: She’s a liar.

It is the mass media Liar Factory I would say should be discussed more than GOP propaganda forwarded like widgets spewing forth daily from their Liar Factory production lines.

But they mostly expect politicians to lie about campaign promises.

If a politician gets hung out in a lie about something else, it usually leaves a mark.

Accusations about lying by political opponents/adversaries are common,

the FBI making such a claim would not be common.

Smear: damage the reputation of (someone) by false accusations; slander

She said there was sniper fire. There was none. She said there was no greeting ceremony. There was a leisurely greeting -- with children, with her child! She said they ran with their heads down to the vehicles (chuckle). "Now that is what happened," she said emphatically.

That's shameful. That's stolen valor.
“Stolen Valor” is a term applied to the phenomenon of people falsely claiming military awards or badges they did not earn, service they did not perform, Prisoner of War experiences that never happened, and other tales of military derring-do that exist only in their minds.

This is the dumb thing Hillary said.

The email server is the dumb thing Hillary did.

Maybe Hillary is the right wing nut intent on sinking her candidacy.

told because they're not your business. To others; they're not "lies", they're "misspeaks" and the speaker didn't mean them and later corrections (themselves "obfuscations&quot set the record straight, or as straight as you need it to be in order to consider yourself "well informed".

I saw this earlier tonight, and thought the establishment Dems must be close to panic.

No one really wants Bernie, except the people. Because he'll do stuff in OUR best interest, not in the best interest of big donors.

I'm looking for the establishment to start someone else. They've been pressuring Biden and Gore. We'll see what happens, because it seems Clinton is less electable every day, and with every new revelation. She might be really nice, and a genuinely good person, but in politics perception is too often reality.

His political cartoons carry great clout! The not-so-good ship Hillary is taking on water fast and going down like she did in 2008 - only quicker.

Michael Ramirez is a two-time winner of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in 1994 and 2008, and a three-time Sigma Delta Chi, Society of Professional Journalism Award winner.

He is a Senior Editor and the editorial cartoonist for Investor's Business Daily.

Ramirez is a Lincoln Fellow, an honorary member of Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society, and has won almost every journalism award in addition to the prestigious UCI Medal from the University of California, Irvine and the 2005 National Journalism Award, the 2008 Fischetti Award and The H. L. Mencken Award.
