Whenever Jim Webb spoke, the students at Creighton University who had gathered to watch the Democratic presidential debate winced — openly.

When Lincoln Chafee spoke, they frequently laughed.

When either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders spoke, they listened intently.

In many ways, the first Democratic presidential debate came down to the race’s front-runners — Sanders and Clinton — for many of the 25 college Democrats gathered to watch the debate.
